Thomas Sr. WILKINSON

Coat of Arms: Blue with a horizontal Stripe between three unicorns.
Crest: A unicorn emergining from a crown.
Motto: Tenez le Droit (Hold the Right).

I do not claim this to be our Coat of Arms. There are so many Wilkinson Coat of Arms out there, it would be difficult without lots of study and research to determine which would be ours. This is just for FUN!

Cherokee Indian Tribe

Cherokee Indians: One of a tribe of Iroquoian Indians formerly occupying Northern Georgia and North Carolina, now dwelling in Oklahoma. The Iroquoian language is the language spoken in the tribe. Authority: Obtained from page 234 of Funk and Wagnalls Encyclopedic College Dictionary --FK

Note: While visiting a cousin, Mrs. Ethel Adams Jinks, she related this story to me, this happening was after she was married and had a family. FK

While she was in town one day (maybe to a fair) , she passed a fortune teller. The fortune teller wanted to tell her fortune but as she did not believe in fortune tellers she told her so. The fortune teller began to tell her some things about herself. She asked Ethel if she knew her Father, the Great Chief ------------( so & so) she has forgotten his name, watched over her ? She replied she didnt know anything about it. All the time thinking she didnt know what she was talking about. After telling her this, she told her to get her son vaccinated or she would lose him if she didnt. (He was sick at the time, or soon after). When Ethel talked to her mother, Sophronia Frances Wilkinson Adams, she told her about her encounter with the fortune teller and what she had told her. She said her mother told her she did have a grandmother who was a Cherokee Indian. Ethel has forgotten whether she said she was on the Wilkinson side of the family, or the Rupe. But, being related to an Indian Tribe was true. Ethel told me that her children did become ill and she did have them vaccinated. She felt certain if she hadnt of done so, they would have lost their son. He was very very ill. After returning home I asked several of the relatives if they knew, or had ever heard that we had a great grandmother who was Indian. Most of them had heard we did have some Indian Ancestry but did not know who, or how it was.

Since the above information was gathered, we learn that we do, and did have an Indian great, great, great, grandmother who was a full blooded Cherokee Indian. She was the 2nd wiffe of our GGG Grandfather Thomas Wilkinson, or the mother of Soloman Scribner Wilkinson who lived and died near Bethany, Harrison Co. Mo. We have been told by Lucia Willkinson Reed of Coffey, Mo that her mother told of the older generation of Wilkinsons used to set around with blankets around their shoulders Indian fashion. Lucias father was Solomon Scribner Wilkinson Jr.

I'm not sure I believe the fortune teller thing and I'm not sure about the fact that she was Cherokee. But... I do believe we have an indian maiden as the mother of Solomon. Bobbi Stockton

Horatio and Amanda Wilkinson had 10 children, six sons and four daughters. A son and daughter, the first two born, died at an early age, but the remaining members of that family with one exception, lived long lives. Not many details are available regarding the early life of the Wilkinson's in Iowa and Missouri. Apparently, they lived mostly on small farms and raised corn and a few heads of livestock. Horatio, the father, was askilled cabinet maker and engaged in that craft in addition to his farming activities. Information concerning those early years also indicates they lived for a time in three or four different counties in Iowa and Missouri, moving from one state to the other on two or three occasions. It was while the family was living in Nodaway County Missouri that Horatio Nelson Wilkinson died on July 17, 1880. His wife, Amanda Wilkinson survived him by 32 years. After crossing the plains in 1885 , she died in 1912, in Spokane Washington. Horatio Wilkinson always claimed that one of his great uncles was General Wilkinson who served under George Washington.

I'm questioning some of the birth places of these original 10 children. So can't tell you how much emphasis to put on them. As I said in one of my earlier e-mails I have been going through the different census records to help determine exact birth years. Hope this helps fill some of your gaps, I have just given you the Horatio's children, and not any grandchildren. E-mail soon, I do enjoy hearing from other cousins. Connie

This is from the Family history that was researched and prepared by Clarence P Harper. Son of Emma & Sterling Price Harper.

It says: In 1842 Horatio Wilkinson married Cintha Amanda Ford. Cintha was born in New York State August 12 1828. Her mother's maiden name was Mary Franklin who was married three times. Mary's first husband was Mr. Butterfield by whom she had one son. While the son was still very young, he was left with a married couple who were to take care of him for a while. A little later, the couple moved away taking the boy with them. Mary never heard from her son again and was unable to locate his whereabouts. Butterfield later died. Her second marriage was to a Mr. Ford by whom one daughter, Cintha Amanda, was born. Sometime later, Ford sailed for England to collect an inheritance but was never heard from again. It was always believed that the ship on which he sailed may have been sunk. Her third marriage was to a Mr. Scovell who later died. There was no issue from this union. Mary was born in New York state in 1809 and was living there at the time Joseph Smith, the original founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, first preached there, and he preached many times in her home. She always claimed that Benjamin Franklin was her great uncle, but no attempt has ever been made to corroborate this relationship. Bearing the name of her third husband, Scovell, Mary came across the plains from Missouri to Oregon with her widowed daughter, Amanda Wilkinson, and her four grandchildren in 1885. She died in 1892, she was of Irish descent.

The Family of Horatio Nelson Wilkinson

      (Author unknown)

Horatio Nelson Wilkinson, child of Solomon and Charlotte Wilkinson, was born August 29, 1821 in Ohio.

Horatio Married Cintha Amanda Ford in 1842 in Iowa. Cintha was born in New York State on August 12, 1828 and was a young girl when she arrived in Iowa with her family.

Horatio and Amanda had six sons and four daughters. A son and a daughter, the first two born, died at an early age but the remaining members of that family lived long lives. The children were born in the states of Iowa and Missouri where the family lived in rural communities on small farms. Horatio was a skilled cabinet maker and engaged in that work in addition to his farming activities.

Horatio died on July 17, 1880, at an age of nearly 60. At the time of his death he was living with his family in Nodoway County, Missouri.

Three years after the death of their father, the four oldest sons, Chester, Albert, Francis and William, decided to leave Missouri and go west. They traveled by train to Spokane, Washington. Shortly after arriving there, Albert and Chester moved to Reardon, Washington, a small village about twenty miles west of Spokane. They remained there for the next seven years. Chesters two oldest children were born there.

Sometime after Albert and Chester moved to Reardon, William and Frank migrated to Heppner, Oregon in Morrow County. Frank eventually filed on a homestead in that general vicinity.

In 1885, William returned to Missouri to get the rest of the Wilkinson family, which consisted of his Grandmother, Mary Scovell (Franklin, Ford), his mother Cintha Amanda Wilkinson, his sisters, Julia Ann and Emma and his younger brother, John. They made the trip west in a covered wagon. The trip lasted six months and they arrived in Spokane in October. The proceeded to Heppner, Oregon shortly thereafter.

In 1890 or thereabouts, Chester and Albert moved from Reardon, Washington to the area around Heppner, Oregon, where they also filed on homesteads. They continued to live there until 1899 when the two older brothers decided to migrate to Southern California.

Eventually each brother acquired several acres of raw desert land adjoining each other near the little town of Ontario, California. In order to make the land productive, they had to clear it of sagebrush and cactus and provide water for irrigation. They set out orchards of apricots, peaches and other fruits. The crops of these were sold to local canneries and other buyers. They both continued to live there for the remaining years of their lives. Albert died there in 1922 and Chester in 1931. While Albert never married, Chester brought his young wife with him from Missouri and produced a family of three sons and two daughters. Chester was born in 1851 and Albert was born in 1853, both were born in Iowa.

Francis (Frank) Marion Wilkinson was born in 1857 in Missouri and grew to manhood while living in that state and Iowa. He married Mariah Rhodes there and one child, Cora Ann, was born to this union. In 1883, Frank joined his three other brothers and went west, settling on a homestead in the vicinity of Heppner, Oregon. He left his wife behind in Iowa, from whom he was later divorced.

After several years, he sold his homestead and roamed about, working at odd jobs for several years. Around 1900, he settled on a parcel of land on Three-Mile-Creek, near Stites, Idaho. His mother, Cintha Amanda, filed on this land as a homestead (since Frank had already used his rights in Oregon). The work was hard and the hours long, but Frank managed to develop this land into a very good living for him and his mother and other relations who came to pay extended visits. Since his mother, Cintha Amanda Wilkinson, was practically an invalid during her later years, Frank did most of the housework alone, including the preparation of the meals. In addition to a full days work in the fields, including planting, cultivation and harvesting crops, he also had to milk his cows, attend to the other live stock, churn the butter and can large quantities of fruit during the season. He made jellies and jams too and cheese. He butchered hogs with the help of a neighbor.

In 1911, when his mother was taken to Spokane to live with a relative, Frank sold the ranch and also went to Spokane for awhile. Around 1915, Frank joined his brothers, John and William, on forty acres of land in Conner Gulch, ten miles south of Lewiston Idaho, in the state of Washington. This was Johns homestead. The three brothers built a small house, raised a few chickens, and tried growing other crops with little success. After three years they abandoned the place and went their separate ways. In 1923, Frank went to Ontario, California to claim an inheritance of a small parcel of land that was left to him in a will by his brother Albert. Frank remained in Ontario until his death in 1949.

William Merrill Wilkinson was born in 1860 in the State of Missouri. He lived at home with his parents until 3 years after the death of his father. In 1883 he joined three of his brothers and migrated to Washington and then Oregon. In 1885, he returned to Missouri and brought the remaining members of the Wilkinson family to Oregon. Bill traveled around a lot visiting relations in different sections of the Pacific Northwest, including Oregon, Idaho and Washington. He also traveled to California one or two times. He worked at odd jobs long enough to earn a few dollars and then he would pay an extended visit to the home of a relative. Bill liked to peddle anything he thought might sell easily, but somehow he never seemed to earn much money when he tried it. He was usually friendly, pleasant to be around and easy to get on with. Because of this, most relatives didnt seem to mind having him live with them for awhile.

Bill married Ellen Cole in 1894. She was 17 and he, 34. The marriage took place in Oakland, Oregon. The first two of his children, Pearl and Lemeul Everett were born there. His third child, Leila Elvina was born in Hardman, Oregon. While the children were still very young, Bills wife left him, leaving the children in Bills care. Unable to care for them, Bill sent the children by train to the home of his wifes mother in Oregon, where they grew up. In a letter written in 1963, Jessie Lee Adams Neff, daughter of Minerva Emaline (Emma) Wilkinson Adams, relates her memories: "Geanoligies of Wilkinsons -- Grandpap Wilkinson as his wish was to be called By Grand children, Grand and Great and Great Great. He was married to a full blood Scotch lady, by name of Parsons (perhaps confused Parsons with Packard) Our Grandpa John P. Wilkinson He was married to Mary E. Dale Of which her father was a wealthy slave owner in revoluntionary war. Also Grandpap Dale was full blood Irish. The Wilkinsons were of English descent. Our John Parsons Wilkinson was named for his mothers family name, and he was quite Scotch In language, etc. Such words as dues for does. Also Scottish Such as finance items But his word was as good as gold. He was strictly honest. But he would swear. He read the Bible continuely He had a personality Everybody loved him. He was Uncle Johnny to everyone who knew him. He lived to be 92 years. And reared a family of nine children All grown Except Walter S. who was a year and six months when his mother passed away. My mother cared for him as she was the oldest of Wilkinsons. She was married to Edwin C. Adams. She passed away 1879, 19 days after my birth. Leaving one other little girl Neava Joan (?). Two years old. There were three little orphans left. So it fell to another sister of my mother Sarah E. Smith to care for the orphans. I lived with them until grown and married. I was almost 21 years. I do not know all dates of birth So am sorry But I don't think of more. So you may take out as you like. Making more concise as you see fit And oblige

Sophronia married Andrew Warren ADAMS on 3 Feb 1883.

Jason Gleason Wilkinson, was born 7 Dec. 1830, in Ohio, to Solomon Scribner Wilkinson and Charlotte "Packard" Wilkinson. He and his parents and family lived in Ohio for a number of years, as did several of his other relatives. Namely, Wilkinson's, Packard's, Bacon, Rupes, Mitchells and other's. When Jason was a young lad his parents with other's moved to the southern part of Missouri. (At this time the Rupe's moving to Indiana, then to Centerville, Appanoose County, Iowa with some of the Wilkinson's.) Jason and his parents and family moved to Harrison County in the late 1840's. Jason being a young man at this time. On the 25th of April 1855, at the age of 23 years, he was married to Julia Ann Rupe, by the Justice of the peace, James Hughes, at Centerville, Appanoose County Iowa. She was 18 years of age and the daughter of John N. Rupe of Centerville, Iowa. Julia Ann was born the 10th of March 1836, in Indiana. After their marriage they came to Harrison County, Missouri to make their home. Although they returned to Centerville, Iowa and bought a town property the 22nd of September 1858 and lived there a short time, one would say the state of Missouri was mainly their home. They bought a farm of 41 acres more or less, in Sherman township, Harrison County, Missouri.

Found in book 4 of Land Transfers in Bethany Court House, Bethany, Missouri. Also the 10th of September 1866 in Bethany Township, N.W. of Betheny in Township No. 63 Jason and wife bought some more land. I believe there was more buying and selling but did not record it. Although the family of Jason Gleason Wilkinson bought a town property in Centerville, Appanoose County, Iowa the 22 of of Sept. 1858, they were back in Missouri for the birth of their son Chester, who was born 17 Apr. 1860. (According to Census Records.) Also see copy of property Deed in book.' The family lived near Gardner, Harrison County, Missouri, just a few miles northeast of Bethany, Missouri. Here the older children attended school and where Laura Jane and her husband to be, met. (William Orsen Adams). According to the 1860 Census, John N. Rupe, father of Julia Ann, made his home with his daughter and family. From different information we have gathered, John making his home with Julia Ann and Elizabeth making her home with children living in Iowa. Jason and family, according to the 1860 Census, lived at this time in Bethany township the 23 rd of June 1860. On the 10th of January 1869, Julia Ann passed away, Her youngest child, Sophronia Francis being just a little over the age of 3 years. Julia Ann is buried in the Dale Cemetery, Harrison County, Missouri. This left Jason Gleason with a family of small children to care for. Charlotte Elizabeth was old enough to work out. so she worked out from that time on until she was married. Her sister Laura Jane, stayed in the home of Jim and Kate Mitchell for awhile, then worked out. (worked out, meaning worked for wages for neighbors and different relatives...K Chester, was taken into the home of Josh Selby, Mary Ann, was taken into the home of her Aunt Permelia Wilkinson Bacon, and Sophronia Francis was reard in the home of Chester Bacon until her older sister's had a home of her own, then they took care of her as well as some of the brother;s and sister;s of her husbands. Charlotte, or "Lib"and Laura Jane, or "Jane" were 13 and 11 respectively, when their mother passed away. These girls were to marry brother's Horace Anderson Adams and William Orson Adams, in a double wedding on the 5th of March 1879. The Adams brother's had also been left orphans with brothers of their own and to make a home for the younger one's in the families. They were a very close knit family. Another sister, Sophronia Francis, Fronia" Wilkinson married an Adams brother, Andrew Warren Adams. This making three brother's and three sisters marring into the same family. Needless to say , their children were double cousins, the next thing to brothers and sisters according to blood lines. Jason Gleason maintained a home for himself for a few years. He is found in the 1880 Census living alone. In the year of 1890, the 26th of March, he may have went to Nebraska with his children. If so, they lived near Broken Bow and Platt River. Returning home in September of the same year. On the 4th of November 1892, we find the three families moving to Oklahoma to make it their home. (We know believe there may have been other's that went with them.)

These excerts taken from the Bethany "Broad Ax" News paper of the 5th August 1897. "Jason Gleason Wilkinson had a Claim in Oklahoma. (Note complete story in the W.C. Adams story...K) W.C. Adams and family who have been living in this county the past year, left tuesday for their former home near Kingfisher, Oklahoma". Jason, Jane and Fronia and families, left the state before the five years were up tp "prove up" on their claim, but it is believed that "Lib" and family remained to make the West their home. Jane returned because of ill health. Jason G. made his home with the different children and his grandchildren. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Jane the 14th of December 1906, near Bethany, Mo. He is buried in the Dale Cemetery, Harrison County, Missouri. He did have a tombstone but it is now broken and we were not able to find it. It has been seen by some of the great grandchildren, but it has been a few years ago.

This taken from the Republican Clipper of "Bethany Nine Years Ago Dec. 15, 1906". Jason G. Wilkinson died friday of last week of Heart touble at the home of his son-in-law W.O. Adams in Cypress township, aged 76 years. As to date, 1978, we have not been able to obtain a death notice or obiturary of Julia Ann "Rupe" Wilkinson. We have been to the Dale Cemetery and taken a picture of her tombstone. Through friends and relatives of the fmily, we have obtained an orbiturary of Jason Gleason Wilkinson. Jason G. Wilkinson, one of the old pioneers of Harrison County, died last friday afternoon of heart trouble at the home of his son-in-law, W.G. Adames, (W.O. Adams) of Cyress township. He leaves a large family of children among who is Chester Wilkinson of this city. He was past 76 years of age and always a good citizen. He was a memeber of the Christian Church. Furneral services were conducted Sunday by Elder R.W. York after which the remains were consigned to their last resting place in the Dale Cemetery.
