Reuniting the Oconto Pecors continues to be a wonderful success story. From the day I first encountered the Pecors, I knew they would lead me back to Antoine Destroismaisons dit Picard. They didn't all end up being brothers, some are cousins, too. Internet searches, connections with descendents, volunteers who copied records for me, and a professional genealogist descended from one of the Oconto Pecors all helped provide the clues and answers. The Oconto Co website gives us Peter Pecor’s story: Peter's ancestors where Pecard's from Picardie, FR. In Picardie there was a family estate surrounded by the village of Picardie. Three brothers owned this estate at the time of the "Wars of Picardie". However, each left everything they owned and went to Montreal, Quebec. Peter's grandfather was one of these 3 brothers.
An undated newsaper article at the Oconto Co, WI, website by Dave Cisler tells John Pecor's story: John’s grandfather was a Frenchman who deserted the army during the time of Napoleon. He fled first to England, and then to Canada. Family tradition, which the family has not been able to document, is that 3 brothers jumped ship in France. 2 ended up in Canada and the other settled in the French territory (later the LA Purchase) in the 18th century. The story goes that they changed their name to Picard (Picarde or Picardy), as they were originally from Picardie, FR. Along with this story was the belief that there was a family estate back in FR, but that the brothers were unable to claim it because of their desertion. This story actually belongs to cousin Joseph not brother John.
The descendents of Felix Pecor say he descends from 1 of 3 brothers that left France.
Descendents of Peter Pecor relate that the family changed the name from Picard to Pecor in Canada to protect the family.

Notes for Pierre Picard:
Peter came to the Oconto, WI, area in 1849. The settlement had a few mills along the Oconto River, and a few settlers. After arriving in Oconto, Peter married Angelique. Peter owned much of the land that is now Frenchtown, within Oconto. He was wealthy and a prominent leader. He donated the land for the original St. Peter Catholic Church and Cemetary. He also helped build the original log building that served as the church. He also donated land and helped build the first school. The school was named for him [Pecor Public School], and was located on Center Street. He sold land to the Oconto Lumber Co. and also laid out the lots that were sold to the settlers. Peter's children settled in other parts of Oconto Co, including the Town of How. There a creek is called Pecor Creek. After Angelique died, Peter went to live with her people on the reservation. When he died, Angelique's family did not want his body to be buried in Oconto. Instead they wanted him to "sleep his long sleep" near his wife. There is no trace of his grave, but it is said to be where the Little Oconto joins the Oconto River (near South Branch). (my NOTE: I have also found that there is a Pecor Lake in Oconto Co.)
The 1860 census shows Peter Pecor age 36 and Angeline age 26 with children Caroline Pecor age 6, Marselle age 5, Meslran age 3. This came from another researchers (great aunts?) hand written copy so he doesn’t know how accurate it is. Also written on this sheet is a note that John White age 74, Tippemoona age 60 and Alex Monon age 59 are all listed in the same household and that John White and Tippemoona (might) be the grandparents.

Angelique was born in the late 1820's or early 1830's. She was the daughter of one of the last Menominee Cheiftens in the Oconto area. She was called a "princess". Apparently, she was courted by many men, both native American and settlers. Her father did not intially approved of her marriage to Peter. Angelique is buried at the Reservation.

Felix was from Quebec. In Oconto, WI, he was a barber. His obituary from the Oconto County Reporter dated Nov. 12, 1914: "Felix Picard died at the home of his son David at 231 Pecor Street, with whom he had lived for the past 5 years, at 5' o'clock yesterday morning of old age, after having been confined to his bed about two weeks. Deceased was born in St. Urcel, QU Feb 20, 1828. With his brother, walked from Green Bay here more than 60 years ago, when Ococnto had only 5 settlers. He is survived by his wife, age 77 years, two daughters, Mrs. Dan Chosa, Milwaukee and Mrs. Alphonse St. Louis, Kelly Brook; three sons, David, jr., of Oconto, Herman, of Peshtigo, Alphonse, Mauston WI, and two brothers, Peter of Shawano and David of Menominee, MI. His brother Peter is unable to come on account of his age, 93 years, but his other brother, sons and daughters, grandson, B. R. Picard and wife of Milwaukee and other relatives are here for the funeral which will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church....." On Felix’s death record, it lists the Informant as David Picard, residing in Oconto. The death record lists him as dying at age 86, 10 months, and 21 days and that his parents are Marshall Picard and Mary Belonger, both born Canada.

The undated newsaper article by Dave Cisler at the Oconto Web site tells us more about Joseph. The article refers to John, but descendents of Joseph who are alive today and remember the uncles in the photograph say the article is about Joseph not John. Son Fred told the story. Fred was the youngest and is the one remembered as Uncle Fred by two of the descendents that have contacted me. Also, their own father and grandfather Joseph is in the picture. "John" left Canada when he was 19 and went to the US, spending time in PA. In 1854, he moved to Oconto, WI, by traveling by boat to Green Bay and then by foot, carrying his possession on his back. He first stayed with Peter Pecor, founder of Frenchtown. "John's" son said that no one knew whether these two Pecor's were related or if Peter is what brought "John" to Oconto. Upon arriving in Oconto, "John" helped build the first sawmill, Jone's watermill at Susie's Hill. "John" married shortly after arriving in Oconto, and then went to work for Gardner Lumber Co, Pensaukee. He then went to work for Holdt and Balcom Lumber Co, Oconto, who he worked for 68 years. "John" was a carpenter and he also helped with the construction of Comstock Mill, which made barrel staves, and Holt's shingle mill (which burned in the 1930's). He built 3 homes, which are still standing [as of the article]: 1 on Main Street, 1 on Pecor Street, and the last on McDonald Street. The last home had 21 doors at one time. "John" had 17 children, but by the time a photo was taken (date unknown, son Fred is young), there were only 7 boys left. Six of the boys went into the lumberjack trade like their father, and 1 went into railroading. In Oct 1871, the great Peshtigo fire occured. "John" went to Sugarbush to help fight the fire. Before going, he put a ladder down into the well and told his wife to take the children down there if the fire came close.
