Page 812 CHURCHSTOW is a village and parish in Kingsbridge union, containing, by the census of 1861, 376 inhabitants, and 1877 acres; in the deanery of Woodleigh, archdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Stansborough, East Devonshire 2 ½ miles north-west from Kingsbridge. The vicarage, which is annexed to that of Kingsbridge, is valued at £200 per annum, in the incumbency of the Rev. Alfred Nottage Hingston, M.A., and the patronage of the Lord Chancellor; the Dean and Chapter of Exeter are appropriators of the rectorial tithes, which were commuted, in 1839 at £328 per annum. The church is an ancient edifice, in the Perpendicular style, dedicated to St Mary, with tower and four bells: the east window was presented by the late Mrs. Lowe. There are some small charitable bequests for the benefit of the poor and the repairs of the church. WHITE HALL is a handsome mansion, pleasantly situated, the residence of Peter Stanley Lowe Esq., who is lord of the manor. In former times the lord of this manor had power to inflict capital punishment. The River Avon, which runs through this parish for about two miles, abounds in salmon and trout, and in the adjoining parish of Aveton-Gifford there is a salmon weir, the property of the lord of the manor. VENN is a small hamlet, about 1 mile north-west, pleasantly situated in a beautiful vale. KINGSBRIDGE UNION WORKHOUSE, which is on the borders of Kingsbridge, stands in this parish.
