AUBURN, Maine – Bonnie Fifield of Auburn, Maine died Friday, January 26, 2007 at the age of 94 at Clover Manor, following a short illness after hip surgery.
Bonnie was the daughter of Lloyd Holbrook Additon of Augusta, ME and Goldie Alice Hayward of Cooper, ME. She was born May 2nd, 1912 in Lewiston, Maine. She was born prematurely and family stories were told that she was kept in a shoe box at the end of the kitchen wood stove to keep her warm.
Bonnie was a longtime resident of Auburn and Poland, ME. She graduated from Edward Little High School in 1929. She married John “Jack” Giberson in Auburn on June 24th, 1929. She had 2 daughters by the marriage, Virginia and Margaret.
She married 2nd Bill Fifield a Navy officer. Bill was stationed in Pearl Harbor and Bonnie learned to Hula while there. She returned to Maine the day before Pearl Harbor was attacked. There were no children from this marriage.
After returning to Maine she bought “Folly” farm on the Snell Hill Road in Turner, Maine. She worked at a variety of different professions during her many years. She sold jellies for Bessie’s and sold her own recipe for cinnamon apple jelly to Bessie’s. For a time she sold silverware door-to-door. She worked for the State of Maine in Civil Defense doing programs for emergency mass feeding and for building fallout shelters during the late 50’s and early 60’s. Then she created the Maine Safety Council during the 70’s and 80’s where she worked until her retirement.
She was very musically adept at the piano, organ and accordion. She could listen to a song once and play it perfectly. She also created lovely handcrafted items from things she gathered from nature. Bonnie was fantastically creative at home interior decorating. She always loved changing her decor to fit each season and holiday.
Bonnie is predeceased by her daughter Virginia Additon Giberson (1930-2004).
Bonnie is survived by her sister Mrs. Edith “Babe” Norris of Auburn, ME, nephew Bruce Norris of Clinton, NJ, and a daughter Margaret Bragdon and her husband Fred of Peak’s Island, ME. She is also survived by her grandson Michael W. Walton, Sr., who she raised from the age of three, and Mike’s wife Margie of Clinton, Maine.
Bonnie’s other grandchildren include Paul and Marti Grady and their 3 children Matthew, Jonathan, and Rebecca of Springfield VA; Jack and Erin Hooper and their son Jack of Mesa AZ; and Rick and Christie Hooper and their daughter Leila of Chico CA.
Other great-grandchildren include a great-grand daughter Emily Rose of NH and her son Devin, and great-grandsons Michael Wm. Walton, Jr. of Grand Forks, ND and Steven Walton of Hillsboro, NH.

USS James O'Hara (APA-90) was a Frederick Funston-class attack transport that served with the US Navy during World War II and later in the Korean War. The ship was named after a Continental Army officer who fought in the Revolutionary War and who later became Quartermaster General of the US Army.

Initially acquired as an Army transport, the ship was soon acquired by the Navy and reclassified an attack transport for the duration of the war, then returned to the Army and redesignated USNS James O'Hara. In the 1950s she was reacquired once again by the Navy and reclassified, serving as USS James O'Hara (T-AP-179) until her final decommissioning.

The ship was laid down for the Army under Maritime Commission contract by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation, Tacoma, Washington, 16 June 1941; launched 30 December 1941; and delivered to the Army 30 November 1942.
