L'Acadie CD-ROM
by Portage Technologies

If you have any interest at all in Acadian history and heritage, then you owe it to yourself to get this CD.  Trust me, it is well worth it.
Here is a run-down of the parts of the CD (with links to those sections at Portage's site).
   1) History of the Acadians
Timeline, Deportation info, and Information on some of the places they lived
   2) Voyage to Acadia
14 places to visit today; includes slide shows and Quicktime VR 360 degree displays
   3) Culture & Traditions
Music (samples of a number of Acadian-Cajun musical artists)
Genealogy (basic information on the Acadians)
100 word Acadian Dictionary (can have them pronounced audibly)
         Folklore (several stories)
Evangeline (complete text and some background info)
         Women of Acadia
   4) Acadia of the Maritimes
The complete text of one of the best resources on the Acadian culture.

In a number of places, you can click on the screen and a word or section and you will hear it spoken. Also, hidden within all of this are a number of video clips and several printed works.  Besides the Acadia of the Maritimes text, you also get sections or all of the following (plus more):

Against the Odds: A History of the Francophones of Newfoundland and Labrador
by Paul M. Charbonneau with Louise Barrette, translation by Mike Luke
Scattered to the Wind: Dispersal and Wanderings of the Acadians, 1755-1809
         by Carl A. Brasseaux
Jean-Paul Hébert Was There: From Port Royal, Acadie to St. Martinville, LA
         by Sheila Hébert Collins
The Acadians of Nova Scotia: Past and Present (just part of the book)
by Sally Ross and Alphonse Deveau
Historical Guidebook of the Evangeline Region: Prince Edward Island, Canada
by Georges Arsenault, translation by Sally Ross
   Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie
         by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

PROS
   • It is the only computer product on Acadian history and culture, and it is very well done.  It just plain makes me proud of my heritage.
   • As noted above, there are some works "hidden" throughout the CD, like Brasseaux's work on Acadian movements during the exile.
   • Doesn't install any files on your hard drive; though this means it runs slower, you don't have to use up space on your CD.
CONS
   • Doesn't install any files on your hard drive; though this doesn't waste hard drive space, it does mean some things take a bit longer.  It'd be good if they gave you an option to install the most commonly used files.
   • It doesn't really cover anything new (but is an excellent presentation of material which should teach you some things you didn't know).  I would have liked more on genealogy as well.
