ACADIAN-CAJUN GENEALOGY
PERIODICAL ARTICLE INDEX

Introduction | List of Periodicals Indexed | Table of Contents | Reference Notation | Miscellaneous Notes

The complete book is now online.
I hope to have the updated printed version soon, which will cover all of this material plus the 1990-1999 articles.
INTRODUCTION:
Have you ever just sat down and browsed through all of the different volumes of the genealogical periodicals of this area? They are loaded with valuable information. Many people only look at back issues when they are referred to them from another source. But, if you know where to look, you can go directly to these back issues for information.
This article index covers over 5000 articles from 21 genealogical periodicals that deal with the Acadian and Cajun people. This includes most of south Louisiana's genealogical periodicals and also a few from southeastern Canada. Articles from the following periodicals are indexed in the book, Acadian-Cajun Genealogy Periodical Article Index. Their reference abbreviation used in the book is also given.
This web pages contains: a listing of the periodicals indexed in the book, the book's table of contents, and selected sections of the book. If there is no link to a category, then it is not included on the web site. The original book covers each periodical from its beginning until mid-1990.

REFERENCE NOTATION:
The notation of the issue(s) referred to is as follows. There is a two or three letter abbreviation for the name of the periodical. Then the volume number is given, followed by a period. Next is the issue number, followed by a colon. The last number is the page number. For example, an article found in volume 4, issue number 2, page 253 of L'Heritage would appear as HER 4.2:253. If the article is continued, you will find the continuation numbers on the next line as such ... (+ 3.1:64, 3.2:114, etc.). When an article is continued for many (5-6 or more) issues, I've just put the first, second, and last occurance. You can always work backwards to find preceding occurances (the previous issue is listed on the continuation, but not the succeeding one).

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ON THE PERIODICALS:
There are some details that you should know about some of these periodicals. Acadiana Profile* is not a genealogical publication, but it has some articles on Acadian/Cajun genealogy that I feel should be included. Likewise, only pertinent articles from the Louisiana Genealogical Register* and Le Baton Rouge* are included. The Acadian Genealogy Exchange has many queries and small pieces of data not included in this index. [Note: Queries were not indexed for any periodical. Check a surname index for such information.] If the material was a half a page or more, it was counted as an article and was included. The Annual Genealogical Institute Proceedings* are the speeches from seminars given by LSU in the past. The Deep Delta periodical only lasted for 4 volumes and then went out of publication. The Louisiana State Courier has 2 volumes, and Les Memoires Du Bayou Lafourche has 7 volumes. By the way, Les Memoires went by the name of La Societe des Cajuns for the first issues. Also, please note that quite a few articles in the New Orleans Genesis extend over many issues ... and the articles often skip issues here and there. Articles from the French-Canadian and Acadian Review* were included only if they were pertinent to French Canadians with Louisiana descendants or dealt with Acadian ancestors. The same goes for the periodicals: Genealogist*, La Societe Historique Acadienne*, and Memoires de la Societe Genealogique Canadienne-Francaise*. Please note that La Societe Historique Acadienne and Memoires de la Societe Genealogique Canadienne-Francaise are written in French! I have translated the titles for you, but you are on your own with the rest. Please remember that only 'articles' are included in this index. It is not a surname index, and it does not index queries and pedigree charts. If you come upon an article that doesn't give the location of the information, looking at the periodical in which it's found will often tell you about the location. For example, the "Greenwood Cemetery" article doesn't give a location, but the fact that it's found in St. Mary Links tells you about where the cemetery is located. In the FAMILY/PEOPLE section, more than one person's name is some times mentioned. I have listed the articles according to the first person mentioned. I have also cross-referenced this section so that you are referred elsewhere if someone is not the first name mentioned, but is in the title of the article.

* Articles were not fully indexed. Only articles pertinent to Acadians or Cajuns or the Acadiana region of LA were indexed.
