Acadian-Cajun Genealogy: Step by Step
Chapter 4: RESEARCH: 1810 to 1920
"Why select the years '1810 to 1920'
There are two things that characterize this period: U.S. censuses and church
records. Censuses were done every ten years. This period includes all of the U.S.
censuses. Also, many of the Catholic church records from this period have been
published, eliminating the need to travel from church to church to find records."

Now we have some good materials to consult at the library. I've included some of the best sources for Acadian-Cajun genealogy. Besides the books, the genealogical periodicals have tons of information.

  • Church Records

  •     Many church records have been printed in books and periodicals**. Some of these are:
Selected Acadian and Louisiana Church Records, 2 volumes (George Bodin)
Southwest Louisiana Records, 36 vol. (Rev. Donald Hebert) ... covers western Acadiana
Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic Church Records, 13 volumes
South Louisiana Records, 12 vol. (Rev. Donald Hebert) ... covers the eastern part of Acadiana
South Louisiana Vital Records, 5 volumes (Terrebonne Genealogical Society)
Archdiocese of New Orleans Sacramental Records, 4 volumes
More details  on these books are available at the LA GenWeb site for Terrebonne Parish.
  • Censuses

  •      Some are printed in books and/or periodicals. Indices are in print for the entire Louisiana census for the years: 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, and 1870. Individual parishes have various census printed in book and/or periodical form. The published census books are listed in the appendix of the book. The censuses  found in genealogical periodicals are listed in the Acadian-Cajun Genealogical Periodical Article Index.  Actually, the book's author has placed the listing of censuses online.
