"William Brokaw was born, in a covered wagon behind an ox team near Burbank, South Dakota as his parents were enroute from Illinois to South Dakota. He was raised on a ranch near the town of Bristol, which is now in Day County, South Dakota. He married in Ortonville, Minnesota to Elizabeth Meuer and they lived on a large ranch in Day County, South Dakota and, their children except for the youngest (Anton) were born there. In 1912 they opened the "Brokaw Hotel" in Bristol and three of their children still live there (1959).

William was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. He died of a heart attack and his obituary gives that he was born in Vermillion, South Dakota. Their ranch was near Bristol, and those that live there are John, Ann and Celia Brokaw, all of whom are unmarried (1959). No record of Clifford Brokaw; Richard lives in Long Beach, California and Anton Brokaw in Yankton, South Dakota. These two are believed to be married but was unable to get any further record of them. Family records from Leslie L. Brokaw of Renton, Washington and, Mrs. Lucille Meyer of Spokane, Washington, both being children of Lloyd W. Brokaw."
