He died 9 June 1892 at age 47 in Mouth Mound Creek, Greenbrier, West Virginia. On 10 June 1892, he was buried at Ellis Burial Grounds, Greenbrier, West Virginia.

• On 12 December 1865, at age 20, he married Barbara Ann Coffman, who was age 20, in Greenbrier county, West Virginia. She is the daughter of Joseph Coffman and Sarah Wilson. She was born about 1845 in Greenbrier county, West Virginia (then called Virginia). She died 25 September 1876 at age 31 in Greenbrier county, West Virginia.
• After Barbara's death, on 30 May 1878, at age 33, he married Martha Susan Marshall, who was age 27, in Monroe county, West Virginia. Sue, as she is known, is the daughter of William A. Marshall and Delia. She was born in March 1851 in Monroe county, West Virginia (then called Virginia).

He died in June 1975 at age 92 in Alderson, Greenbrier, West Virginia. After Nina's death, he married Nina's niece, Pauline Bare.
5. Allen Burton Ellis was born 15 July 1884 in Greenbrier county, West Virginia. He died 18 July 1932 at age 48 in a "lunatic asylum" in Wichita county, Texas.
6. Maud Alma Ellis was born 25 September 1887 in Greenbrier county, West Virginia.
7. Terrence W. Ellis was born 2 November 1890 in Greenbrier county, West Virginia. He died sometime prior to 1900.
