James Calvin Burdette (Sr.) is the son of Martin Luther Burdette and Lydia Susan Roach. He was born 28 September 1887 in Alderson, Greenbrier, West Virginia. He died 18 April 1963 at age 75 in Mount Pleasant, Charleston, South Carolina. He is buried at Saint Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Mount Pleasant, Charleston, South Carolina.

About 1910, at age 22, he married Gertrude Campbell, who was age 20. She is the daughter of Walter John Campbell and Hannah Isabelle Gifford. She was born 24 October 1889 in Illinois. She died 10 May 1971 at age 81 in Duval county, Florida.
