Orral L. Burdette

Orral L. Burdette, 95, of Champaign, Ill, formerly of Savoy, Stone Mountain, Ga., West Palm Beach, Fla., and Charleston, died at 7:05 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana, Ill.

Mr. Burdette was born Aug. 31, 1910, in Ansted, a son of Everette Clifton and Pinie Ruth Legg Burdette. He married Alma Ruth McKinney in December 1937 and later married Helen Grace Gaal on Nov. 22, 1948. She died Jan. 30, 1994.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Champaign, the Kiwanis Club and the Moose Lodge. He graduated from Virginia Institute of Technology in 1935 with a BA and BS in biology and engineering graphics, and received his M.Ed. from Duke University in 1940. After studying advanced science at Virginia Tech in 1959, counseling at Marshall University in 1963, chemistry at the University of Florida in 1963, modern math at Florida Atlantic University in 1968 and engineering systems at the University of South Florida in 1972, Mr. Burdette taught high school chemistry and biology at Beckley High School and Stonewall Jackson and Charleston High School in Charleston, and engineering graphics at Morris Harvey College.

During World War II, he served as a medic in the European Theater. In addition to his duties in an air transit hospital in England, he worked with fire departments during the bombing of London. After that, he returned to teaching in Charleston. In addition to his teaching, he served as director of Adult Education in Kanawha County. In 1966, he moved to West Palm Beach where he taught high school and served as chief curriculum administrator for Palm Beach County high schools. He retired in 1977. In 1980, he moved to Stone Mountain where he taught engineering graphics at Dekalb Community College.

Survivors include two sons, Jim Burdette of Parkersburg and Everette Clif Burdette of Champaign; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, 110 B St., St. Albans, with the Rev. Jody Pistore officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

There will be a gathering of family and friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
