Canon Edward Girdlestone was vicar from 1862 - 1872, during which time he became a nationally known figure because of his fight for better conditions for farm workers. He addressed the British Association, wrote many letters to "The Times" as well as making personal and local representations. Eventually he organised the migration of between 400 and 500 local people to other parts of the country where better paid work was available
