THE ELLER CEMETERY
(Located 5 miles west of Bloomington, Monroe Co., Indiana)

In 1833 when John Eller, Sr. brought his family to Monroe County, Indiana and purchased 400 acres of land, 1/2 acre was made an ELLER family burial ground. You will note from the sheet listing those who are buried there, most were buried in the 1800's. John Eller, Sr., b. 23 Oct 1786; d. 24 Aug. 1840. John's wife, Susan, b. 14 Oct. 1788; d. 1 Oct. 1867. John's aged mother, Christina Eller, b. 28 Dec. 1757, d. 11 July 1844. You will note the stone for GEORGE ELLER, oldest son of John Eller, Sr., who came with his father from Kentucky in 1832 -- d. 23 Sept. 1876. I mention these names as they were the pioneers of my ELLER line who were born in North Carolina and Virginia, moving to Kentucky before settling in Monroe Co., Indiana.

Large ELLER REUNIONS* were held each year in a Maple Grove nearby on June 11th. After the bountiful dinners, they would then walk to the cemetery to decorate the graves with flowers. Also enclosed are "write-ups" of the large ELLER REUNIONS, which my daughter, Mary Beth, and I found deep in the "stacks" of old newspapers at the Indiana University Library several years ago.
(* Eds. more on these in later issues)

After the Reunions ceased and no one was left to visit and care for the graveyard, it became a deplorable state -- overgrowth of bushes, trees, poison ivy and groundhogs dug under the stones, breaking some, etc. So- in 1975-76 my husband and I decided to make our Bi-centennial Project - a restoration of this little graveyard. We live in Indianapolis, about 60 miles from the cemetery- however, we contacted the Monroe Co. Airport mgr., John Myers, who also had ancestors buried there. (the airport now owns land on three sides of the cemetery). Mr. Myers was most helpful and I took pictures of the finished product and sent to those descendants who were living at that time. My husband and I had gone through and recorded all information we could from the stones and even the 2nd time. This sheet of records of dates, names, etc. is on file in the Monroe Co. Library in Bloomington, Indiana -- also here in the Indianapolis State Library.

Now 18 yrs. later we have begun another project on the cemetery since it is so overgrown with trees, etc. With another brother's help, who lives nearby the airport, we went to the Airport Mgr. again (former one deceased) -- also the Twp. Trustee. Just recently, I was there and met with these two gentlemen. The Twp. Trustee said he had a Boy Scout Troop which was very interested in clearing the Cemetery! It seems I am the only Eller descendant left who is interested in this and I am going to continue as long as my health permits. In May I had a new sign made and set in concrete!
