(Eds.: The following data are almost entirely from James W. Hook, GEORGE MICHAEL ELLER AND DESCENDANTS OF HIS IN AMERICA, New Haven, 1957 (Reprint: Eller Family Association, 1990). The section from that book on the James Eller family (pp.269-276) has been reformatted according to a plan used by the National Genealogy Society Quarterly. This offers our readers a good opportunity to compare the format plan of Mr. Hook with this plan. Mr. Hook's format, widely used in 1957 when he published his work, is rarely used today by professional genealogists.

FIFTH GENERATION

5. James Eller was born on June 25, 1827 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. He died on March 19, 1926 in Bina, Ashe County, North Carolina.

He was married to Mary Ann Carlton (daughter of Thomas Carlton) on October 24, 1849 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Mary Ann Carlton was born on August 15, 1830. She died on August 30, 1924. James Eller and Mary Ann Carlton had the following children:
  6 i. Martha Catherine Eller was born on February 24, 1851. She died on May 10, 1862.
  7 ii. Thomas Hamilton Eller was born on November 18, 1852. He died on May 6, 1862.
  8 iii. Phineas Eller was born in 1854. He died young.
  +9 iv. Harvey Augustus Eller (born on July 7, 1855).
  +10 v. Ruth America Eller (born on May 8, 1857).
  +11 vi. Adolphus Hill Eller (born on April 9, 1861).
  +12 vii. Albert Sidney Johnson Eller (born on August 29, 1864).
  +13 viii. Edwin Cicero Eller (born on December 19, 1866).
  14 ix. Franklin Plato Eller was born on April 4, 1869 in Ashe County, NC. He died on June 15, 1892 in Old South Bldg., University of NC, Chapel Hill, Orange Co., NC.
  15 x. John Carlton Eller was born on October 30, 1873 in Ashe County, NC.



SIXTH GENERATION

9. Harvey Augustus Eller was born on July 7, 1855 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. He died on January 2, 1946 near Bina, Ashe County, North Carolina.

He was married to Mary Eller (daughter of David Eller) on October 14, 1877. Harvey Augustus Eller and Mary Eller had the following children:
  16i. Bertha Ruth Eller was born on June 6, 1879 in Ashe County, NC. She did not marry.
  +17 ii. Walter Frederick Eller (born on April 3, 1881).
  18 iii. Joseph Ocsal Eller was born on February 20, 1883 in Ashe County, NC.
He was engaged in the real estate business in Raleigh, North Carolina.
  +19 iv. Nannie Clyde Eller (born on July 12, 1885).
  20 v. Henrietta Virginia Eller was born on May 19, 1897.
  21 vi. Jesse Franklin Eller was born on February 19, 1890.
  +22 vii. Martha "Mrs. Gert" Gertrude Eller (born on January 13, 1892).

10. Ruth America Eller was born on May 8, 1857 in Wilkes County, North Carolina.

She was married to Reverend David Shelton Hubbell on April 24, 1884. Ruth America Eller and Reverend David Shelton Hubbell had the following children:
  +23 i. Jay Broadus Hubbell (born on May 8, 1885).
  24 ii. Eller Hubbell died young.
  +25 iii. Paul Eller Hubbell.
  26 iv. Ruth Hubbell. A college teacher, Resided in Bristol, Tennessee.


11. Adolphus Hill Eller was born on April 9, 1861 in Wilkes County, NC. He was born on April 9, 1861 in Wilkes County, NC. He died on December 7, 1941 in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, NC. (death year was mistakenly entered as 1841 in article)

He attended Moravian Falls Academy and in 1881 entered the University of North Carolina from which he graduated with an A. B. degree, in 1885. He then attended Folks Law School at Cilly, N.C. and was admitted to the N.C. Bar in 1866. He practiced law in Winston- Salem, N.C. under the firm named of Eller and Starbuck. In 190& he became Secy. Treas. of the N.C. Railroad and remained in that position until 1913 when he became Vice President and Chairman of the Trust Deartment of the Wachovia Bank and Trust Co. of Winston-Salem. In 1908 he organized and became president of the Standard Building and Loan Association. He was elected to the N.C. State Senate in 1905 and from 1908 to 1912 was Chairman of the N.C. State Democratic Commission. He was a trustee of the University of North Carolina, 1905-1933 and Chairman of the Winston-Salem Board of Education 1927-1933. He was Secy. and Trustee of the Winston Salem State Teachers College for negroes for 30 years and one of the founders of the N.C. Baptist Hospital. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon College Fraternity, a member of the Masonic Lodge and of the Baptist Church. (See Who's Who in America Vol. 20 and 21.)

He was married to Laura W. Newland on November 20, 1896. Laura W. Newland died on May 28, 1938. Adolphus Hill Eller and Laura W. Newland had the following children:
  27 i. Mary Eller died young.

  29 iii. Adolphus Hill Eller Jr..


12. Albert Sidney Johnson Eller was born on August 29, 1864 in Wilkes County, NC. He died on February 9, 1920 in Ashe County, NC.
After attending Moravian Falls Academy, he returned to Bina in Ashe County and resumed farming. He held various public offices and from 1902 to 1910 served as Clerk of the Superior Court of Ashe County, North Carolina.

He was married to Laura McMillan on September 19, 1889. Albert Sidney Johnson Eller and Laura McMillan had the following children:
  +30 i. Carlton Reeves Eller.
  +31 ii. Anna Agnes Eller.
  +32 iii. Beatrice Eller.
  +33 iv. Mack Eller.
  34 v. Alton S. Eller .

He was married to Frances Campbell. Albert Sidney Johnson Eller and Frances Campbell had the following children:
  35 i. Bryan Eller.


13. Edwin Cicero Eller was born on December 19, 1866 in Ashe County, NC. He died on December 23, 1920.
He attended Moravian Falls Academy. He was a merchant and farmer at Bina in Ashe County, North Carolina.

He was married to Laura Catherine Graybeal on May 22, 1895. Laura Catherine Graybeal was born on May 8, 1871. Edwin Cicero Eller and Laura Catherine Graybeal had the following children:
  +36i.Ina Maude Eller.
  +37 ii. Edwin Cicero Eller Jr..
  +38 iii. Grace Graybeal Eller.
  39 iv. Gladys Eller. m. R. Tipton McNeil. son of Thornton McNeil
  +40 v. James Eller.
  41 vi. Pansy Eller was born on November 7, 1906. She died on May 2, 1919.
  42 vii. Paul Eller.

He was married to Susanna Harless. Edwin Cicero Eller and Susanna Harless had the following children:
  +43 i. William Truett Eller (born on February 26, 1925).



SEVENTH GENERATION

17. Walter Frederick Eller was born on April 3, 1881. The family lived in Washington, D.C. where he was engaged in the realestate business.

He was married to Adrienne Trice Phillips on September 10, 1917.


19. Nannie Clyde Eller was born on July 12, 1885. He was a practicing lawyer in Buena Vista, Virginia.

She was married to Thomas Graybeal. Nannie Clyde Eller and Thomas Graybeal had the following children:
  44 i. William Eller Graybeal.


22. Martha "Mrs. Gert" Gertrude Eller was born on January 13, 1892. She died on July 7, 1991.
Killed in a car accident on her way to church; she was in her 99th year;
She was buried about July 10, 1991 in James Eller Cemetery, Ashe Co., NC.

She was married to Fred L. Waddell about 1922. Fred L. Waddell was born on August 2, 1892. He died on May 31, 1964. He was buried about June 3, 1964 in James Eller Cemetery, Ashe Co., NC.
After Fred's death, Mis Gert lived alone for the remainder of her life. No issue


23. Jay Broadus Hubbell was born on May 8, 1885 in Smyth County, VA.
(EDS.: he was author of the book, Franklin Plato Eller and John Carlton Eller, reviewed elsewhere in this issue.)

He was married to Lucinda Smith on June 1, 1918. Jay Broadus Hubbell and Lucinda Smith had the following children:
  45 i. Jay Broadus Hubbell Jr..
  46 ii. David Smith Hubbell.


25. Paul Eller Hubbell.
Resides in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He was a Rhodes Scholar and a veteran of World War I. He was a Collage teacher.

He was married to Huna Thompson.


28. John DeWalden Eller.

He was married to UNKN.. John DeWalden Eller and UNKN. had the following children:
  47 i. James Carlton Eller was born on January 6, 1931.


30. Carlton Reeves Eller.

He was married to Grace Sturgill.


31. Anna Agnes Eller .

She was married to Frank R. Jones.


32. Beatrice Eller.

She was married to Cicero Faw. Beatrice Eller and Cicero Faw had the following children:
  48 i. Gwin Faw.
  49 ii. Stella Faw.
  50 iii. Ina Faw.
  51 iv. Lenna Faw.


33. Mack Eller.

He was married to Hetta Stansberry (Standsberry).


36. Ina Maude Eller.

He was married to Dorothy Reed.


(Eds. The James Eller family of Ashe County achieved a level of prominence in their county and state; much has been written about the various members of this Eller family, still an examination of the above reveals a genealogy still quite incomplete. We hope that living descendants of the James Eller family will complete this genealogy and share it with our readers.)
