Notes:

Per Jeff Snavely [SMTP:[email protected]] I have the root of the FitzAlan family as Alan le Senescal of Dol, Dapifer of Dol, Norman Baron of Shropshire. The family is said to be "descended from the old Armorican Counts of Dol and Dinan, a race whose origin is lost in the mists of antiquity. They are generally believed to have been the descendants and representatives of the ancient patriarchal rulers of Armorica in the time of Julius Csar." [The Story of the Stewarts by the Stewart Society] The descendants of this Alan's grandson Ala(i)n fitz Flaald is where one branch became the FitzAlan Family, Earls of Arundel, and another branch became the Stewart/Stuart family, High Stewards of Scotland and later Kings of Scotland (Kings of Scots) among other lines with various lesser titles.

The first Alan was Dapifer of Dol, but NOT Baron of Shropshire. It was his grandson Alan Fitz Flaald who was the first to come to England (under Henry I). He is looked at as the patriarch for three reason, I would guess. First, he was the point at which the two main families of descendants, the Fitz Alana and Sewarts, diverged. Second, he was the first of the family in England, and Third, and most importantly, until the work of Round early in this century, he was the earliest person to whom the family could be traced. taf
