SOUTH BEND - Ronald A. Coffman, 54, of East Chicago, Ind., and South 27th St., died early Saturday after being shot in a robbery attempt. St. Joseph Special Crimes Unit is investigating. Mr. Coffman was employed by Yellow Cab Co. and South Bend Department of Code Enforcement. He was born Sept. 21, 1939, in South Bend. On July 19, 1975, in Lafayette, Ind., he married Sally G. Harris. She survives with a son, Allen J. of East Chicago; and two brothers, Cloyde F. ''Bud'' of Mishawaka and William W. of South Bend.

Memorial services will be at a later date. Cremation will take place. McGann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Ronald A. Coffman Fund in care of Teachers Credit Union.
