Bartholomew Ahern - Aherns of Tournafulla

 

 

Bartholomew Ahern  (1874-1959)

 

 

Born in Tournafulla, County Limerick, Ireland, in 1874.

Emigrated when he was 20 to New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A in 1894. (Naturalized on October 23rd 1900)

He may have lived for a time with his older brother Dennis on Tour Avenue when he first came over, but he boarded at 1083 Whalley Ave for a while anyway (from 1910 census).

 

Bert, as he was known started work as a tool & die maker at The Geometric Tool Company on the 24th of December 1900 and remained employed there until he retired (see article from the company newspaper below).

He was also an active member of the Westville Fire Department.

 

Bert married Mary Murray (b.1881) and they moved into Mary's childhood home at 49 Fountain Street in New Haven. (Just around the corner from Tour Ave). The picture of Bert on the right, was taken on their honeymoon.

 

They had two children Mary in 1910 and Margaret in 1921.

 

Mary (Murray) died at the age of 77, on November 27th 1958 and Bartholomew died the following year on September 21st.
