Adam Hawkes, 1605-1672, Saugus, MA

Adam Hawkes was born January 26, 1605 in Hingham, Norfolk, England. He came to America in 1630 with the Winthrop Fleet. Shortly after his arrival he married Ann Hutchinson, a widow. In 1638 he was granted 100 acres of land which he called Close Hill in what became Saugus, Massachusetts. Adam Hawkes died on March 13, 1672.

In 1980, the 350th anniversary of Adam's arrival, Ethel Farrington Smith's book, Adam Hawkes of Saugus, Mass., 1605-1672, The First Six Generations in America, was published by Gateway Press, Baltimore, This book is especially helpful to those trying to trace their Hawkes/Hawks ancestry. Though now out of print it is widely available in genealogical libraries throughout the country.
