Civil registration began in Scotland in 1855. Prior to that, events such as birth, marriages, and burials, were recorded in the old parish registers. What makes an 1855 record extraordinary is the amount of information requested and recorded. The number of questions spill over two pages, probably making the act of registration a chore both for informant and registrar. The following year, the amount of information was severely pruned. Thus, 1855 records stand out as genealogical gems.
Meg Greenwood has been transcribing the Death records, and with the help of Randy Chapple has been compiling them into a searchable index which can be accessed through the link immediately below. Please note, presently only the death records are being transcribed.
