Mr M'Connel succeeded his father in the estates in 1902. He was educated at Cambridge (M.A. 1881) and was married. Mr M'Connel was greatly interested in all that pertained to the welfare and interests of Colmonell and the neighbouring parishes in South Ayrshire. The prominent feature of his estate is Knockdolian Hall, of conical shape, and so resembling Ailsa Craig as to have been named the "Fause Craig" for which it has been mistaken by sailors in thick weather. The present fine mansion was built in the 19th century after a design by Mr Rhind, near the ruins of the old Castle of Knockdolian. HISTORY OF KNOCKDOLIAN - The (estate) of Knockdolian was acquired in the 15th century by Gilbert Graham, who had a common descent with the Montrose family, and who was a descendant of a former Princess Mary (Stewart), daughter of Robert III. The Grahams sold the Knockdolian barony in the 17th century and their senior living male descendant, ??? Graham Campbell of Shir(van) in (Argyleshire) whose ancestor married the heiress of (Shirvan) and took her name. From the Grahams the estate passed to the Kennedy’s of Kirkmichael, who did not retain it long. Their successors were a family of the name of M'Cubbin, who were there before the end of the 17th century. Through a daughter Knockdolian passed to the Cathcarts, in whose family it remained until the 19th century. The estate is one of the most beautifully situated in South Ayrshire, and includes the conspicuous remains of Craigneil Castle, so called from having been built by Neil, Earl of Cassillis. The beautiful churchyard, in which the lairds of Knockdolian rest, is of much interest. On a very old stone we read. "Heir is buried Andro Snell, smith, died March, 1663 aged 72" The stone was erected by his son, John Snell, the donor of the Snell bursaries, which have now for over two centuries taken many clever Glasgow Students to Oxford. John Snell was himself a student of Glasgow University. Thence he made his way to England. Before making a fortune as a lawyer there he fought on the Royalist side at the Battle Worcester in 1651. A stone to the memory of John Lusk, Pinmore reminds us that he was the father of the late Sir Andrew Lusk, Baronet, Lord Mayor of London. And there is the usual martyrs' monument(s) while the church itself contains the finest window in Ayrshire, the gift of Mr R. F. M'Ewen of Bardrochat, Colmonell, and of Marchmont, Berwickshire.
