Hezekiah and his wife had lived in Maryland, then Edgefield Co., South Carolina, finally moving to Lincoln Co., Georgia about 1765.
Hezekiah was a Revolutionary War Soldier, serving as a private in the Georgia Troops under Gen. Elijah Clarke and received bounty land along Richland Creek in Washington Co., GA for his services
Letter from Lou Bussey Brannon, Columbus, Ga., March 10, 1977
Quoted in The Bussey Family Genealogy, by Lynne Guittard Bussey, 1979, p. 106When Hezekiah and Amy lived in SC, they lived near Modoc. Double Branches Baptist Church is about 3/4 of a mile from the Savannah River on the Lincoln Co., Ga. side. Before the Clark Hill dam was built, the name was Bussey. It is not known where Hezekiah is buried, but there is an old Bussey place just above Double Branches Baptist Church. The house was still standing in 1977. There was an old cemetery near the Savannah River and they moved the bodies to Double Branches Baptist Church Cemetery when the Clark Hill Dam was built. There are a number of Busseys buried there, but no marked grave for Hezekiah.
Regarding the maiden name of Amy:
- Posted to the Bussey Newslist in May 1999 by Franklin Ingram
- "Thomas Hendley (Henley) Bussey Bible"
--has Amey Sullivan as the wife of Hezekiah Bussey, but it has no date of marriage. (Lylla Bussey, Thomas Henley Bussey's daughter, apparently completed the Family Record page of what is known as the "Thomas Hendley (Henley) Bussey Bible." The citation that I have for this is DAR 169 (626), GA Archives. Posted to the Bussey Newslist in May 1999 by Franklin Ingram
- "The Bussey Family Genealogy," 1979, Lynn Bussey Guittard
has Amy Flemming as the wife of Hezekiah Bussey and the date of the marriage as ca. 1768-70.
- Leon Cunningham April 1999
- from notes of his Aunt Lylla Bussey and also from Jodie Huffaker in Nov 1976
- much of her info came from Maud McClure Kelly and from Beatrice Hannon in March 1968: (info which they all seem to state)
- "Amy (Harry) Bussey is believed to be the d/o Rev. Benjamin Harry, a Baptist minister. He was at Stephens Creek Church near Edgefield S.C. and Horns Creek Church in 1794-1796. Rev. Charles Bussey, Hezekiah's father, preached at these churches during these years (South Carolina Baptists, by Townsend) The Harry and Bussey families came to Edgefield Co, SC from Maryland at about the same time. Harrry family names such as David and Nathan now begin to occur in the Bussey line but Benjamin and Amy are used only in the Hezekiah Bussey branch of Charles Bussey's descendants."
In letter dated May 1999, Leon writes:
- "I have no definitive answer but will work on it. I needed to make clear that I am Lylla Bussey's nephew. She died last year at 94 and I have all of her papers, some in reasonable shape and some not. In a quick glance I see references to Hezikiahs wife in different places as Sullivan, Harry and ------. I am not sure of her final decision if any, but I will try to learn. I did see one reference stating "she owned land as Amy Sullivan" possibly attributed to Maude McClure Kelly but I have as yet not found that documented in land records in Lylla Busseys notes. I have one neatly typewritten document dated 26 Oct 1988 with an official looking number BSSHZ002.02 which among many other things shows: "Hezikiah Bussey was married c1768-70 to Amy (Amie,Amey} (thought Harry)" "Hezikiah Bussey and Amy Harry had 10 children"
"states that Hezekiah received 250 acres in Ga. on Feb. 24, 1784 for his service."
Hezekiah Bussey, 2 polls, 2 slaves, 487 1/2 acres, Wilkes Co, GASeven certificates for land grants signed by Gen Elijah Clark in 1784 are registered in the office of the Secretary of State, Atlanta, GA
"Page 40--BUSSEY, HEZEKIAH and wife Amey to Hugh Rees, all planters, 100 acres east part of orig. grant of 200 acres 1784 on Jacob Barnes headright. Mar. 2, 1785. Thos. Bussey, Judith Bussey, Test."
"Page 42--BUSSEY, HEZEKIAH to Robt. Moses, Sr., planters 400 acres at the head of Bryan creek adj. Solomon Newsom, "being the identical land on which said Robt. Moses now lives". Feb. 9, 1787. Stephen Renfroe, John Moses, Drewry Mims, Test."
Hezekiah Bussey was granted 200 acres of land in Wilkes Co., by the Governor in Council
Hezekiah Bussey was granted 200 acres of land
Hezekiah Bussey and wife, Amey, sold to Jonathan Rogan, Revolutionary Soldier of Wilkes Co., GA 287 1/2 acres of land (which had been grated to Hezekiah for his services as Revolutionary Soldier, land on Otonee River, Washingotn Co., GA.)NOTE: (from Houston Foster)
"As a Rev. War Sol, Hezekiah Bussey received 250. acres for his service. Later Hezekiah and Amy sold 287 1/2 acres. Wondered why the two were different if it was the same person. Then I figured out the difference. The original law was that privates would receive 250 acres tax free for 10 years, the law was changed taking away the tax free feature and giving an additional 15% of land instead. Thus he really was awarded 287 1/2 acres."
Hezekiah's will is dated March 2, 1796 and his wife Amy, son David, and John Edwards are listed as executors.
