DEDICATION AND SPECIAL THANKS

This page is dedicated to Vennie (Tramel) Nelson (1907-1991) a very close friend of mine and a descendant of Thenia (Davis) Tramel, d/o Thomas Jasper Davis. From 1969-1971, she and I worked very closely together on the Davis - Tramel family. We were even lucky enough to get to meet at one of the Prairie Point Cemetery Picnics in Bazette, Navarro Co., Texas where her ancestor, Thenia (Davis) Tramel, and my ancestor, Robert Davis, are buried.

Next special thanks to Bruno Davis (1891-1974) and his wife, Orbie (Brent) (1896-1992) who I visited in Feburary 1971 in DeKalb Co., TN. Bruno was a s/o Thomas Jasper Davis and his second wife, Tennie Robinson. They treated us like royalty! Not only were we family, but friends!

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Thomas Jasper Davis and Delia (Laurance) Thomas Jasper Davis lived his entire life in the Pisgah area of DeKalb Co., TN. When he married Delia Lawrence he was not quite 22 and she was not quite 15. Their marriage license was issued December 18, 1861 and they were married the following day by Doc A. Davis, JP.

This picture of Thomas and Delia was sent to me by Melba Love who received it from her aunt, Vennie (Tramel) Nelson. I'm not positive exactly when this picture was taken, but had to be between 1862 and 1878. It most likely came from Bruno Davis, Thomas's son.

I've always been told that Thomas hid out during the war. It is known that his father,Solomon Davis was a Unionist and that Thomas did have 3 brothers who fought for the Union. Also, Doctor Albert Davis, 1st cousin of Thomas, who married them fought for the union and he is the one who died in the war - owned the horse in which the monetary claim was later made by his father, John Davis. However, Thomas Laurance, the father of Delia, was one of the biggest slave owners in the county. Aunt Delia Davis standing next to grave of Thomas Jasper Davis - late 1920's

In this picture, my great aunt Delia Davis, the d/o Robert Davis and Handy Page and gs/o Solomon Davis and Anna Kelley, is standing in front of the grave of Thomas Jasper Davis at the Pisgah Methodist Chruch Cemetery very near the old Davis homeplace in Hannah's Branch. Their daughter, McLissa, who died 1 month after her mother, in 1878 shares a grave marker with her mother. Their daughter, MaLinda, who died 2 months earlier in 1891, shares a grave marker with her father, T. J. Davis.

LAWRENCE or LAURANCE FAMILY - My Direct Line

My Laurance/Lawrence Site

Delia Lawrence, as it is spelled on the marriage record, was the d/o Thomas Laurance, as it is spelled on his tombstone, and Susannah Pafford who had married about 1825 probably in the Smith Co., TN area. Thomas was the s/o William Laurance who left a will dated September 25, 1838 in Smith Co., TN. Many of the William Laurance/Lawrence descnednats intermarried with the John Davis - Abigail Duncan family. Therefore many of us are 'double and triple' cousins.

Like the Davis family, Thomas and Susannah are buried at Pisgah Methoidst Church Cemetery.

Special thanks to my cousin, Tom Simpson, for much of the Lawrence research.

These below pictures, above, were sent to me by Melba Love who photographed them on a recent visit (2002) to DeKalb Co., TN. As you can see above and below, the distinctive feature of Delia and her daughter's marker can't be mistaken.

ROBINSON FAMILY

Grave of Tennie (Robinson) Davis Tramel When Tennessee 'Tennie' Robinson married Thomas Jasper Davis, a widower with 4 young children, she was 20 and he was about 39. He had lost his wife and a 5 month old daughter just months before.

Tennie Robinson was the d/o Levi D. Robinson and Elizabeth 'Betsy' Sewell who had married April 7, 1849 DeKalb Co., TN. Levi Robinson was the s/o William 'Billie' Robinson and Sarah Delilah Bain.

TENNIE (ROBINSON) DAVIS REMARRYS

When Thomas Jasper Davis died on Feb 9, 1892, his widow and second wife, Tennie (Robinson) was not quite 31 and had five children between the ages of 1 and 11.

On Dec 30, 1896 in DeKalb Co., TN, Tennie married second John Riley Tramel by whom she would have two more children - Bulah and Virgie Tramel. In not quite six years, Tennie would be a widow again.

John Riley Tramel was the s/o John Harrison Tramel and Martha Jane McClellan who married Oct 13, 1853 in Dekalb Co., TN. John Harrison Tramel was the s/o Shadrick 'Shade' Tramel and Elizabeth McIntire. Elizabeth was the d/o Archabld McIntire, Jr. and Sarah White. Shade was the s/o William Baton Tramel and Anice Fisher.

Tennie was buried beside her 2nd husband, John Riley Tramel at Snow Hill Methodist Cemetery. This picture of her tombstone was sent to me by Melba Love - a granddaughter of William Jasper Tramel and Bedie (Deskin) and a great granddaugther of Elijah Tramel and Thena (Davis).

Bruno and Orbie were two of the finest people that I ever met. We visited them in February 1971. They knew how to make you feel at home and you immediaely knew that you were family and not strangers.

When I discovered that my great grandfather had a half brother that was still living in 1970, it was quite a shock. I had never even got to know my Grandpa Davis who had died in Feburary 1956 and here was his father's half brother.
