Susannah Ann (Jones) Jobe Worley Hiram Jackson Worley

Letter written to Ludean Rogers Kidd by William Ellis Worley
dated May 19, 1969

Dear Niece, I Will try to help you out some more on your relative problems. That Hiram Worley on the 1880 census, he was my grandfather. My daddy's daddy. He was in the store business at Bloomfield, Ill. and he had the post office there, too, in his store, but he died in 1881, according to that, with pneumonia. It was a cold bad winter and he had to meet a night train to put mail on it and my father always said that he was exposed to the cold and took pneumonia and that was what killed him.

He raised his family on the farm 2 miles due east of Vienna, Ill.. He moved to Bloomfield after he raised his family. I don't know what township they were in. Hiram Jackson Worley was his name and my father's mane was Thomas Jackson Worley. Hiram had to die in 1881 for he was 66 years old when he died. He never had but 2 wives. My father was born in 1860, and in 1864, a cyclone blew them all away and killed his mother and 2 of his brothers, Will and Issac Worley. Will lived about a year, but died from chest injuries. Issac and his mother were killed. I think his mother lived a few hours, but Issac died instantly. This all happened when my daddy was 4 years old. Later, Hiram married a widow Jobe. She had two boys, Billy and Sam Jobe. They were my father's stepbrothers. She raised my father. I don't know either one of Hiram's wive's given names. Papa's own mother was a Graves before she married. Papa always thought his grandfather came from France when Hiram was 7 years old, but he may of been mistaken about some of it. end of letter

P. S. He also said that Hiram and his second wife didnít have any children. I had taken that off of another letter.
