· He attended Haileybury School and then Oxford University (1939/40). He returned to complete his university studies following the end of WWII.
· He attended Officer Training Course at Aldershot around June 1940.
· From November 1940 to February 1941 he attended OCTU RMC Sandhurst and then commissioned in the 12th Battalion Sherwood Foresters in August 1941. The Battalion was sent to India.
· He then transferred to the Indian 4th Infantry Division (Red Eagle Division), Royal Indian Army Services Corps in October 1942. He saw service at, amongst other places, El Alamein, Salamanca and was mentioned in Dispatches at the Battle of Monte Cassino. John attained the rank of Major.
· He worked as an auditor for the British Overseas Civil Service (OCS) from 1947 to 1966 and served in what were then Malaya, the Windward Islands (Antigua), Uganda, Tanganyika, Antigua and the Bahamas. He was awarded his MBE for services to Antigua.
· He retired from the OCS and moved to Australia in 1971. He
worked in the Commonwealth Treasury, Canberra, in the Foreign Investment
Branch. He retired from all work in 1984.
