The CALVERT family lived in and around South Cowton, NRY and then in the Ainderby Steeple, NRY area. They appear in the parish registers of South Cowton, Ainderby Steeple and other neighbouring parishes from the mid 1600s, although their origin prior to that remains unclear. There have been theories that this line of CALVERTs is connected to the family of the same name who became the Barons Baltimore. George Calvert MP, 1st Baron Baltimore, was born and lived at Kiplin, not far from Killerby Hall and Catterick, NRY. He was a politician and an early American colonist. To date, despite extensive research coordinated by Billy BOOTH and further investigation by me, no evidence of a link between these two CALVERT lines has been found. It is interesting, however, to note that there is a link between the Barons Baltimore CALVERT family and a number of families from whom Mary Frances BOWER, wife of Thomas CALVERT/BOOTH, descends.
Richard CALVERT (1696 – 1773) married a woman named Elizabeth who’s surname was possibly BOOTH. There is evidence from a number of wills that she was connected to the BOOTH family who left her grandson, Thomas CALVERT, the properties at Warlaby and Killerby. Thomas CALVERT (b 1760) changed his name by royal licence to BOOTH in 1782 in order to inherit the properties of Killerby, Warlaby and Oran from John BOOTH, a bachelor, who appears to have been related to him; probably an uncle or great uncle.
