In the State Papers of Ireland, Cathbarr oge son of Cathbarr O�Donnell, a cousin of Rory O�Donnell, 1st Earl of Tyrconnell, was known as Caphar or Caffer oge Mc Caffer O�Donell. A warrant for fiant of pardon was issued by Sir Arthur Chichester to Sir John Davys on 12 February, 1606, for 62 persons, of which �Caphar Oge McCaphar O'Donell� was the first. It notes that it is intended that these parties shall put in such sureties they are to pass without delay, paying no fee to any officer, it being for special purposes (1). He is mentioned again in a report sent by the Lord Deputy of Ireland to the Queen�s Privy Council on 2 March, 1607, which noted that in �Tyrconnell some loose kerne, under the guiding of Capharte Oge O�Donnell, and some of the Macswynes, have drawn themselves into a kind of rebellion, pretending outwardly an old quarrel against the Earl of Tyrconnell for some petty challenge of land in that country, having upon the sudden surprised the Castle of Doghe, and a small lough thereabouts�. The Lord Deputy advised that although he had used persuasions with the insurgents to dissolve their company and to seek redress through the State they had not be not persuaded to conform to �those good admonitions� and with the aid of his Majesty�s forces in Tyrconnell they were ready to relieve the castle and lough take by them (2).
