Ragman Roll & Dunbar Prisoners

Rolls of Submission and Homage

Ayrshire, Dumfriesshire, Perthshire and Wigtownshire

March to August 1296

On 28 August 1296, Edward I, king of England, held a "parliament" at Berwick, at which, the earls, barons and major landholders, the heads of religious houses and clergy, and the burgesses of royal burghs and major towns, swore fealty to him for their lands and fiefdoms in Scotland. These acts of homage, numbering over 1500, were recorded in deeds of submission and fealty, commonly known as the Ragman Roll; the greater number of homagers attached their own personal or family seal on ribbons to an instrument of deed, which usually recorded groups of men drawn from the same sheriffdom, though, in some cases, individuals from several sheriffdoms, geographically distant, were grouped together. Prior to the Parliament of 28th August, a number of deeds of submissions and fealty had already been made personally during Edward Is progress up through Scotland, as far as north as Elgin, during the summer months. Some of these are included below, as they record the names of some Dumfriesshire and Galloway magnates.

The following list of names has been extracted from Joseph Bain's Calendar of Documents Relating to Scotland (Edinburgh, 1884), Vol. II; the page number is given at the beginning of each row. At this time, it only covers those from Ayrshire, Dumfriesshire, Perthshire and Wigtownshire. I have as far as possible, separated out the bishops, abbot and clergy.

If begins with a statement of the reasons for which the record is drawn up at the Kings command. Then starts with Sir James the Steward of Scotland, knight, who of his own free will, renounced the leagues with the King of France, and swore fealty at Roxburgh on May 13, 1296. The roll in all contains over 1500 names, and the following three submissions contain the names of knights from Dumfriesshire and Wigtownshire.

[p.194] July 10, 1296: At Montrose: - Sir Alexander de Balliol, knight, Sir John Comyn of Badenagh, senior, knight, Sir Herbert de Maxwell, knight, Sir John le Mareschal of Tosken, knight, Sir John de Moravia, knight, renounced the league with France, swore fealty, and do homage for their lands, each oath separately enrolled. (Endorsed).

[p.195] July 28, 1296: Submission at Elgin in Moray: - Sir John de St. Michael, Sir Robert de Normanville, Sir Dovenald fitz Can, and Sir Adam Gordon, knights, William called Wisman, John de Montfort, Alexander de Hateley, James son of Godfrey de Ros, senior, Reginald de St. Michael, clerk, James son of Godfrey Ros, junior, Robert de Trembleye, Audomer Comyn, William de Lasceles, and Gilbert de Southeyk, swear fealty and do homage for their lands.

Afterwards in the Parliament of the nobles and prelates of both the realms, held at Berwick-on-Tweed in the octaves of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary thereafter [August 28, 1296], the Ragman Roll names over 1500 nobles, prelates, knights, and others, who had done homage for their lands, again renouncing the league with France, and did homage as follows: -
