Fishing Villages of Buchan

   
Late 16th Century Cairnbulg & Inverallochy villages in existence
1696 Poll of Aberdeenshire Cairnbulg had 5 + 12 fishermen
1696 Seatoun of Inverallochy contained 19 fishermen
1792 Cairnbulg and Inverallochy have 6 to 7 boats each manned by 6 fishermen ( approx 78 men in total) 
1795 Seatoun of Rattray (Botany) village completed - approx 10 houses - partly populated by Buchans and Cows from Boatlea
Early 1800's Number of public houses in both villages which was main means of relaxation.

Late 1830s Burnhaven founded by George Mundie of Meethill.
Late 1830s 6 or 7 families move from Botany to the new village of Burnhaven. 
1840 Burnhaven has 23 houses and 6 more contracted for.
1841 No fishers in Botany
1841 28 fishermen reside in Burnhaven, manning 7 herring boats which belonged to the village.6 or 7 families were from Botany but the bulk of the incomers came from Inverallochy and Cairnbulg along with a handful od Ct Combs and Charlestown people.
Early 1840's  3 Cairnbulg Fishermen and a Charlestown move to Bottany to comprise the crews of 2 small yoles.
1849 Main Chollera epidemic - over 50 people from Cairnbulg and Inverallochy died and were interred in the strangers ground of St Combs Churchard.
1855 Burnhaven had a fleet of 8 herring boats and 16 smaller boats and yoles.
1866 Cholera … deaths unknown
1871 63 families inhabiting 57 houses in Burnhaven
1881 Burnhaven had 74 fishermen (60 families) - 4 houses wer uninhabited - past its peak as fishermen started to move to Peterhead.
1882 Burnhaven has 18 herring boats, 11 intermediate sized small-line boats, 23 small yoles.
1886 Burnhaven herring fleet half of what it was in 1882, manned by only 36 fishermen.
1894 Burnhaven had only 5 Fisherman left.
1904-5 Fishing to this date in Burnhaven by a few older fishermen in small yoles until all fishing ceased.
Turn of Century Voted the parish dry
End of Century Villagers of Cairnbulg and Inverallochy could not decide on where to site a much needed harbour, Cairnbulg wanted Westhaven and Inverallochy wanted Whitelink.
1920s Cairnbulg build their own pier.
First half century Last members of few families in Botany died off leaving village to fall in to ruin.
