Left Well's Landing (Cerro Gordo) TN in January 1896 by wagon train during a severe drought. Traveled approximately 100 miles (crow fly) to Pemiscot County MO, crossing the Mississippi River at Cottonwood Point (just above the AR/MO border).
"The information I received from a writer in NC about the drought of the 1890's also inclued the information about the number of wagon trains leaving Edgecomb Co., NC due to the land no longer producing good crops, the depletion of game animals, and no rain."
"According to my 'Uncle Lewis' WEAVER, who was a timber man all his life 'off and on,' and traveled as a child eight years old with the wagon train from Well's Landing on the Tennessee River, there was not enough to eat for the family. The river (Tennessee) got so low that wagons no longer needed a ferry to get across. The trip was made through northwestern Tennessee to the river crossing (Mississippi) at Cottonwood Point. (The river had changed course in the New Madrid earthquake of 1811 and changed sides of the river from Missouri to Tennessee). There has always been a ferry at Cottonwood Point."
