General Notes (Husband)

Copy of Birth Certificate: Reg District: Penzance, 1858,
Birth in the District
of Saint Just in Penwith in the County of Cornwall.
1 May 1858 Numphra, St Just, Benjamin Eddy, boy, father
Henry Pascoe, Mother
Margaret Pascoe formerly Eddy, Fathers occupation:
Sawyer. Registered 11 June
1858.
The following is an Obituary sent by a researcher, it had
appeared in the local
Newspaper:
"One of Waihi's most picturesque and oldest
personalities Mr Benjamin Pascoe,
died at the residence of his daughter Mrs C Barker of Thames
last Saturday. He
was 87 years of age.
Born in Cornwall, Mr Pascoe arrived in Timaru when he was
18 years old. He was
a resident of Waihi for about 45 years and was engaged in
mining in the town for about 31 years. Of a forthright bluff nature Mr Pascoe
took a keen interest in all matters making for the welfare
of the community and
his honesty and sincerity of purpose earned him the respect
and affection of
all sections.
Perhaps his chief interest was in music, he was a life member of
the Timaru Band, and a member of the Waihi Brass Band, later
named The Federal
Band when it was constituted more than half a century ago,
and was a member
when it took part in a little contest held at Te Aroha back
in the nineties
securing first class honours.
Shortly afterwards Mr Pascoe retired from playing but his
son who was then just
a boy followed in his father's footsteps and continued
playing until eventually
he became one of the most efficient all round bandsmen the
band had produced.
For about 10 years before his death in 1927 Mr Ben Pascoe
jnr occupied the
position of conductor of the Federal Band, while another son
of deceased was
also for several years a player in the same band led by his
brother. The late
Mr Pascoe snr was for several terms a member of the Waihi
Hospital Board and
his one hobby during the remaining years of his long life
was to visit the sick
patients in the hospital.
Every Sunday wet or fine one could depend seeing the
old friend doing the rounds from bed to bed offering good
cheer to the
afflicted. He loved
the work. Deceased suffered a heavy
blow a few years ago
when his wife and helpmate who had been with him for the
best part of his life
passed away. He then
went to live with his daughter Mrs Barker at the Thames.
During his sojourn there to the time of his death he
followed his hobby by
visiting the sick at the Thames Hospital just as he had
formerly at Waihi. Mr
Pascoe was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and a devout
worshipper at the
Methodist church.
The late Mr Pascoe is survived by Messrs. Cecil Pascoe and
Thomas Pascoe of
Waihi and Mesdames T Hooker (Waihi) C Barker (Thames)
Johnson, Dean (Otahuhu) and
O'Neill (Wanganui) and was pre-deceased by Mrs A Humphries (New
South Wales) and
the late Benjamin Pascoe(Waihi). The funeral which took place at the Waihi
Cemetery was preceded by a service in the Methodist Church
and a large and
represented gathering paid its last respects. The Rev. A H Ivory conducted the
service both in the church and at the graveside. Five grandsons and the one
great grandson acted as pall-bearers."
Photo from 125th Jubilee publication shows Ben PASCO, member
of the Timaru
Artillery Band 1882, Winners of the First Brass Band Contest
held in New
Zealand at the Christchurch Exhibition, 2nd May 1882.
