Obituary notes for David Samuel WOODMANSEE Jr.
Carthage Evening Press. July 5, 1886. P. 1. “Obituary”

David Woodmansee died at his home in south Carthage, Sunday, July 4th, at three o’clock, after an illness of only ten days. It seems that he had suffered a slight injury to his right hand, which suddenly developed into malignant erysipelas, which soon proved fatal.
Mr. Woodmansee was born in Ner Jersey, Dec. 19, 1820, and at the age of two years his parents moved with him to Highland county, Ohio, where he resided until the year 1872, when he moved to this city. Mr. Woodmansee had hosts of friends in the east, where he was looked upon as one of the most substantial business men of Southern Ohio. He was an ardent and devoted Methodist from his youth, and his greatest delight was to see his children faithful in their church duties. In our community he was recognized as a most honorable and upright citizen, thoroughly conscientious in his transactions with his fellow men. He died in peace, saying “this is an easy way to die”, and he has left behind him a record that is imperishable, and one to which his surviving children may evern refer with pride in the thought that such was the work of—father.
THe funeral services will take place at the M.E. church (and not at the residence, as announced) tomorrow (Tuesday) morning, at 10 o’clock. All friends of the deceased and family are invited to be present. [Transcribed from photocopies of microfilm 7/3/98]

Notes for Nancy SHOCKLEY
Sued in 1887 over the land she and David held in Carthage. They had deeded the southern half of the lot to their son Solomon, but built the fence 9 1/2 feet too far south. When the man Solomon sold it to had a survey done, he brought suit. Nancy apparently sold the land sometime while the case was pending. In the Jasper Circuit Ct, Nancy's side won on adverse possession (having held the land for more than 10 years openly, exclusively, and withouth Solomon's permission). The Missouri Supreme Court reviewed the case in 1891 and refused to overturn the trial court decision. See Irwin v. Woodmansee, 104 Mo. 403.
