Baptismal spsonsors: Samuel Smith & Sarah French. St. Francis Xavier, located in what is now Newtowne, MD, is the oldest English speaking Catholic congregation in America. The parish was established in 1640 by priests serving largely Catholic Maryland on horseback. The church itself was built in 1731. It is not to be confused with St. Francis Xavier in Baltimore, which is the first African-American Catholic congregation, founded in 1793.
