Notes for Zebulon MARCY
Built one of the earliest cabins in Luzerne Co in 1770 in Pittstown Valley (the first in Pittstown) after he arrived from Connecticut that spring. The area came to be known as “Marcy”, now known as Tunkhannock, at the mouth of the Susquehanna River and Tunkhannock Creek. (It is actually now the Marcy Township, formed in 1880 from parts of the Pittston, Ransom and old Forge townships.)

Zebulon’s house was on the road leading up the valley, right in the path of most travelers. The house became well-known as a stopping place with a genial host. Zeb became a man of local importance, and was elected in January 1772, the first constable of Pittston township.

When two local citizens (Ben and Stukley Harding) were killed fighting with the Indians and Tories during the Rev War, Zeb’s rifle killed the Indians who were found near the bodies. Zeb was subsequently hunted by one of the Indian’s family for several years. As a result of the destruction during the fighting in 1778, Zebulon left with his family and returned to Pawling, NY for several years. He was one of the few original settlers to return in 1786 for the redrawing of the land allotment.

“Zebulon Marcy, (1744-1834), was a defender of the Wyoming Valley against the British, Tories and Indians. He was born in Dover, Dutchess Co., N. Y., died in Wyoming, Pa.” (DAR)

Notes for Jerusha CONANT
Famous for telling off Indians while she and her family were held captive during fighting in the summer of 1778. She had managed to make a loaf of bread for her children and had to hide it in her bed when an Indian came in. He smelled the bread and wanted some. She fought him and managed to salvage half the bread. She had one of her children during the fighting as they fled their home.
