Notes for William SCOTT
First appears in Hatfield in 1668, about the same time John Scott appears in Springfield. Similar family names suggest that they may have been brothers or cousins. The frequent connection with Benjamin Scott of Braintree is suggested by the fact that William Allis lived in Braintree for over 10 years before settling in Hadley, however, that Benjamin’s will makes no mention of William.

William was granted a lot in Hadley on 8 Aug 1870. The home lot was 20 rods wide, located on the east side near the north end of the street. He received a grant of land on the plaines on 16 Jan 1671. The valley lands had been purchased from the Norwottuck Indians and there were about 30 families living there by 1670. There were battles with the Indians through the 1670s in which William took part. Part of the town was at times enclosed for protection, but the Scott house likely stood outside the enclosure.

By the time of his death, William had accumulated six lots in various parts of town, including areas that are now Whateley.[ [596]]
