Notes for John Harper
John Harper, Sr. was a farmer and plantation owner who got into shipping and exporting before the Revolutionary War. The family business operated out of Philadelphia and possibly Baltimore. During the War, they fitted privateer ships to loot British shipping. His son John served as captain of one such ship and was briefly captured. (Kinsmen, Notes of Harper and McGee)

“Jean Harper, wife of John Harper Senior died in or before 1813, in Monroe Co. Virginia. John,Sr. died there in July 1819. In his will, he left personal property to other of his children, naming James, Samuel, and Polly (Harper) Byres. A Joseph Harper, living in adjoining Giles county, Virginia was the son and neighbor of John Harper, Jr.” (Drema Henderson <[email protected]>)

This Jean was the widow of Robert Reaburn, Jr., who was murdered by Robert McMahon, Sr. in 1768. In 1785 Margaret Reaburn,Jean`s daughter, married Samuel Sams. The marriage record identified Margaret as step-daughter of John Harper. When John died in 1819,his Will was witnessed by Sams who also received John`s "body clothes". (Based on court record research from james kinsman <[email protected]>)
