Leslie Gault was educated for the Church; but, as his eyesight was affected by too much study, he gave up the idea, and at the age of sixteen was apprenticed for five years to Gerrard Irvine, the largest merchant in the town of Strabane, County of Tyrone. For this apprenticeship he had to pay £100. On the expiration of his time, he commenced business for himself and two years later, at Mr. Irvine's death, he purchased his house and business. This gave him the control of a large proportion of the general business of two or three counties. He entered the shipping business and for many years sent ships with emigrants to New Brunswick and the United States. Few men possessed more energy or ability, or were more popular in the neighbourhood. He filled every office of honour, which could be conferred on him by his fellow citizens, and few enterprises were started without his assistance. But as the result of severe losses in the Grain Trade, the removal of the duty on Baltic timber, the total loss at sea of the ships "Fenwick Keeting", "Repeal" and "Leslie Gault"; and the cargoes of the "Carongi", the "Timandra", "Marquis of Abercorn", "Sir Allan McNab" and "Mary Hamilton" being thrown on a depressed market, the savings of years vanished and he decided to emigrate with his wife and family.

They sailed for Canada in 1842 by the barque "Marchioness of Abercorn which vessel belonged to David Baird of Londonderry, who was one of Leslie Gault's oldest and warmest friends. Nine months after their arrival Leslie Gault died. He left a wife and seven surviving children, three sons and four daughters, who revered the memory of the kindest and best of parents, in whose footsteps they humbly tried to follow.

The family dedicated a memorial window to him in St. George's Church, Montreal, and they errected a monument in Mount Royal Cemetery.

Mary Hamilton, the daughter of Matthew Hamilton of Fintra House, and belonged to one of the old county families of Donegal.

She eventually returned to Canada to rejoin the family.
