Descendants of Moses Gibson See Gibson Endnotes here.

Generation One

MOSES GIBSON was born Abt. 1805 in NC, and died Bet. 1865 - 1867 in Logan Co., KY. He married E. XXXX Bef. 1834. She was born Abt. 1805 in NC, and died Bef. 1860 in Logan Co., KY.

Notes for MOSES GIBSON:  John P. Gibson's death certificate lists Moses as his father, born in VA, but does not list the mother. Census records indicate that Moses was born in NC.

Wills/Settlements, Logan Co., 1856-1874, page 108
GIPSON, MOSES, Equity Box 100, Case #2627

In a suit by Henry Lawson, adm. of Gipson, vs. Gipson heirs to seek permission to sell some land to pay creditors, heirs are listed as Moses Gipson, Jr., son; Mary Gipson, daughter who married Henry Rogers; John Gipson, son; Elizabeth Gipson, daughter, who married a Miller (deceased); Angeline Gipson, daughter-in-law who married Coon Gipson, deceased son of Moses Gipson; Esley and Charley Gipson, grandsons and children of Coon and Angeline Gipson. Filed 12 Jan 1868. Adm: Henry Lawson. Died intestate.

Apparently he was deep in debt with several outstanding notes when he died. To help pay the notes, land that he owned was to be sold at auction. He originally had 50 acres advertised for sale but 19 off the south end had been sold previously and the auction was changed to 31 acres. By the same token, he was owed a few hundred dollars by R. C. Beaucamp that he took to court to collect. I haven't found a record where Beaucamp paid Moses his notes.

The will does not mention Julius, Charles or James. One of the three is "Coon." It probably isn't Charles because he left to fight in the Civil War and was too young to have two children and he died in Jan 1862. Since the marriage record shows "L. A." I believe Julius was "Coon" because of his initials J and L are easy to misinterpret in the old records.

1850 Logan Co. Census: Moses Gipson, age 45, farmer, NC; E. Gipson, age 45, NC; Mary A., age 16; John P., age 14; Julius A., age 12; Charles L., age 10; James M., age 6; Moses, age 2.

1860 Logan Co. Census: Moses Gibson, age 54, overseer, NC is listed in the home of George A. Smith, age 47, farmer, born KY with his wife Elvira, age 26, born TN

Unidentified Gibsons:  Alonzo Smith Gibson, born 7 Jun 1842 in Simpson Co., KY, died 11 Mar 1912, married Elizabeth E. Williams 2 Apr 1868 (MBB 6-229) in Logan Co. She was born 11 Jun 1852, died 18 Mar 1911, daughter Luella, born 5 Aug 1875, died 18 Jun 1878. His death certificate shows his parents as John Gibson (born in SC) and XX Cook. He died of paralysis due to a former stroke at the age of 70 years 2 months and 4 days. All three are buried in Kennerlys Chapel Cemetery in Lewisburg. 1870 Logan Co. Census, Gordonsville Dist: #111 Alonzo Gibson, age 28, farmer, KY; Elizabeth, age 18, KY; William, age 2/12, KY; Susan, age 64, (Alonzo's mother - XX Cook?) KY; James, age 25, KY.

William H. Gibson, born 1870, died 1963, married Cynthia A. Parrish 19 Jan 1888 Logan Co. Cynthia was born 1869, died 1910.

Record of a Moses Gibson marrying Elizabeth Paisley in NC but too soon to be this one. That Gibson family wound up in AR. Moses Gibson married Elizabeth "Betty" Winn 30 Mar 1795 in Farquier Co., VA.

Moses Gibson married Polly Foster 7 Sep 1805 in Ohio Co., KY. 1810 Guilford Co., NC, Dwelling 173, Township L - listing for Moses Gibson.

Notes for E. XXXX:  The "E" may be Elizabeth (they later named a daughter Elizabeth and that was a popular name). There is an Elizabeth Gibson in the 1910 Logan Co. census at age 90, widow, KY VA KY. That would put her birth year about 1820. I'm assuming Elizabeth, the wife of Moses, died before 1860 since she is not in the census with him or any or their children - at least not those in Logan Co.

Children of MOSES GIBSON and E. XXXX are:

i MARY A. GIBSON, b. Abt. 1834, Logan Co., KY; d. Aft. 1868; m. HENRY J. ROGERS, December 24, 1857, Logan Co., KY2; b. Abt. 1833, Sumner Co., TN; d. Aft. 1868.

Generation Two

JOHN P. GIBSON3,4,5,6,7 was born December 15, 1835 in Logan Co., KY, and died October 05, 1918 in Logan Co., KY. He married ZILLAH PENROD8,9 January 21, 1858 in Logan Co., KY10, daughter of SOLOMON PENROD and MARY DILLON. She was born November 24, 1844 in Logan Co., KY, and died August 04, 1906 in Logan Co., KY.  See the Penrod line.

Notes for JOHN P. GIBSON:  When John and Zillah married, he was living in Logan Co., age 22, first marriage, born in Logan Co.; Zillah was a resident of Logan Co., age 13, first marriage, born Logan Co.

1860 Logan Co. Census: #132/124 John P. Gibson, age 24, farmer, KY; Zilla, age 15, housekeeping, KY. (Next door to Solomon and Mary (Wilson) Penrod.)

John may have been in the Civil War as a private in the 8th Calvary Regiment, Co. 11, mustered in 5 Aug 1862 in Russellville and mustered out 23 Sep 1863 in Russellville.

1870 Logan Co. Census, Gordonsville Pct.: #363 John Gibson, age 31, KY; Zillah, age 25, KY; William, age 5, KY; John, age 3, KY; Mary, age 1, KY.

1880 Logan Co. Census, Dis. 170, Hardison Pct: #129/131 John P. Gibson, age 44, farmer, KY Blank NC; Zillah, wife, age 32, housekeeping, KY KY KY (same for rest); Wilson H. ?, son, age 14; John W., son, age 13; Mary E., daughter, age 10; Sarah E., daughter, age 9; Charles L., son, age 7; Martha S., daughter, age 5; James D. ?, son, age 2.

1900 Logan Co. Census: #162/163 John P. Gibson, Dec 1835, age 64, married 40 years, KY NC NC, owns farm; Zillah, wife, Nov 1854, age 55, 14 children/11 living; Wilson P., son, Nov 1864, age 35; Samuel, son, May 1881, age 18; Amos A., son, Mar 1884, age 16; Millard F., son, Mar 1889, age 11.

Three children died between 1860 and 1900 - Seth was one; names of the other two are unknown.

1910 Logan Co. Census: John P. Gibson, age 74, widower, born KY, parents born NC; son Wilson P., age 44, single; son Millard, age 21, single.

Note that John's death certificate shows Moses born in VA instead of NC but everything else indicates NC. He died from influenza in the epidemic of 1918. Death information was given by Wilce Gibson (which is probably his son, Wilson). Sue Lynn's book, Descendants of James Thomas Wilson, identifies Millard as the son of John W. Gibson, born 21 Aug 1887, died 28 May 1968 and identifies John P.'s son as William F.

18 Jan 1908, Deed Book 88, page 25. John bought 86 acres of land on Mud River for $400 from W. L. Penrod - agent for Lewis M. and Mary Jane Carlisle. One acre was reserved for a school house. This is the same land conveyed by W. L. to John in DB 58, page 636, and of record in DB 6, page 602.  More About JOHN P. GIBSON:  Burial: October 07, 1918, Arnold Cemetery, Logan Co., KY

Notes for ZILLAH PENROD:  William Guston was the minister who performed the wedding ceremony for John and Zillah at the M.E. Church South.  More About ZILLAH PENROD:  Burial: Arnold Cemetery, Logan Co., KY.
