Descendants of James Pendley I -
please note, I have more information on this line than is shown here. Please
contact me if you are interested in additional information.
Generation One
James
Pendley I was born Abt. 1580 in Cornwall, England. He married
Lucinda Albert Bef. 1621. She was born Abt. 1600 in
Cornwall, England.
Notes for James Pendley I:
Information on James Pendley through to James H. Pendley came from
Dean Lunsford. Dean says his information came from "Laura Pierson,
Melva Best, Taylor Pendley, Eldon Pendley, Gary Mitchell, and T. E.
Pendley's book about the Early Pendleys, and many more on-line
cousins." Information also came from the book "Pioneers of Butler
County, South of Green River," published in 1992. Lajuan Donaldson
later said that some Pendley researchers think the information on
James Pendley, I could be wrong.
Child of
James Pendley and Lucinda Albert is:
i |
William Pendley, born 1621 in
Cornwall, England; died in MD. |
Generation Two
William
Pendley was born 1621 in Cornwall, England, and died in MD. He
married (1) First Wife Pendley Abt. 1643. He married
(2) Elizabeth Ann Reed December 24, 1659 in MD. She was born
1621 in MD, and died August 1677 in MD. He married (3) Christina
Wilson May 12, 1679.
Notes for William Pendley:
Dean Lunsford notes that: William
came to America in 1637 as an indentured servant to the Stilwell
family of Maryland. In 1665, Arthur Pendley came to MD to join his
uncle William who was, by then, free of his indenture. William was
born Apr 1621 to James Pendley and Lucinda Albert. He married
Elizabeth Reed on 24 Dec 1659. William and Elizabeth had six
children. After Elizabeth died, William married Christina Wilson -
they had no children. Arthur Pendley died in Jun 1670 in an Indian
attack in western MD. There was no record of a marriage or family
for Arthur.
Lajuan e-mail 13 Jul 01 says that she
is a member of the Pendley family research group that Dean belongs
to. They've traced the immigrant Pendley (spelled Penly then) to
William born around 1616-1620 in either England or VA. William's
mother was Hannah Boyle according to VA court records. She may not
have been married to William's father. She arrived in VA in 1619
and married three times while there. Edward Hill - had a daughter
Elizabeth by him; Thomas Spilman - had a daughter Mary by him; and
Alexander Mountenay - a daughter Francis and a son Alexander, Jr.
Hannah outlived all three husbands and died in 1659 in Elizabeth
City, VA. William lived in VA and MD and died in 1650 in Elizabeth
City, VA. He was flogged for badmouthing the governer in MD and died
after that - possibly as a result of the flogging.
William had three children: William,
Thomas and Dorothy. The only record is for Thomas who married
Elizabeth XX. Thomas died in Northumberland Co., VA, and Elizabeth
is listed as his widow in 1698. Elizabeth remarried to a Harrison
who sold land to her son William in Richmond Co., VA. William
married Mary XX and bought land in Richmond Co. in 1706/07.
Elizabeth, born in 1798, may be his daughter but the other two
children are Thomas and Mary. Thomas married Sarah Stone and had
four children: William, Alice, Joshua, and Thomas.
Willilam moved to Dunmore Co. (later
renamed Shenandoah), VA. A pre-war census shows him with nine
children. Joshua moved to Halifax Co. VA. Thomas stayed in Richmond
Co., VA at least through 1755. No record of Alice. William and
Joshua later moved to Burke Co., NC in the late 1770s or early
1780s. James of Butler Co., KY, is believed to belong to the Burke
Co., NC William.

somewhere else). 1) Patton Pendley, 2) Melissa Pendley,

Pendley, born 3 Apr 1888, died 5 May 1960 (born when Sarah was
178 years old and Thomas had been dead 146 years). The
file also shows that Patton Pendley, born in the 1700s,
married Lily Cantrell on 4 Feb 1906 (he would have been almost
200 years old). Thomas married Milley XXXX and they had a son
Epaphroditus born 1782 in VA and died 19 Mar 1868 in Scott

September 21, 1846 in Butler Co., KY. He married Amelia Moness
Smith April 12, 1796 in Burke Co., NC, daughter of Solomon Smith
and Rebecca Cooper. She was born August 30, 1778 in Burke Co., NC,
and died December 06, 1831 in Butler Co., KY.
Notes for James H. Pendley:
From Dean Lunsford's file: James worked a farm owned by Mr. Thomas
Wilson until Sep 1821 when he purchased the land. He farmed this
land until Oct 1830 when he divided it and sold a half portion to
each of his two sons, Larkin and Solomon on 6 Oct 1830. Monessa had
taken ill and was suffering from old age and a breathing ailment -
they moved in with Solomon. After Monessa died, James moved in with
Austin where he died in 1846.
Census records: 1790 Burke Co., NC;
1800 Wilkes Co., NC; 1810 Grayson Co., KY Census: James Pendley, age
bracket 45 and over, 4 males under age 10, 4 males age 10-16, 1
female age 26-45, 2 females under age 10, and 1 female age 10-16.
In Butler Co. 1820, only Austin Pendley and Joseph Pendley are
enumerated. In Butler Co. 1830 was Solomon Pendley, age 60-70, and
in Butler County 1840 was a male age 80-90 at Austin Pendley's
dwelling (not necessarily a Pendley).

late Solomon Smith, deceased, of the County of Burke, State of North
Carolina, conveyed to Thomas Wilson of Grayson Co., State of

lands, slaves, and personal estate of said descendent.

County; and Joseph Pendley and Nancy his wife, Levi Pendley and
Catherine, and Elena and Austin Sullivan of Hopkins County,
Kentucky, sold to Thomas Cropper 170 acres lying on waters of Big
Muddy Creek.
There was a large cedar tree just to
the middle of the cemetery at Sandy Creek Church. Behind the
flagpole there are 12-14 unmarked graves that are believed to be
those of James Pendley and his wife and part of his family. There
was a reunion in May 1999 and they found the cedar tree had been cut
down.
Pioneer Families of Butler Co. shows
that James was born in Rutherford Co., NC or Cornwall,
Nottinghamshire, England. Burial: Sandy Creek Church Cemetery,
Butler Co., KY
Notes for Amelia Moness

Laura file 1233260 Ancestry World Tree
shows his name as Smith Rudolph Pendley, born 24 Dec 1804 in Burke
Co., NC; died 4 Apr 1860 in Butler Co., KY; married Sarah Whitaker
on 17 Feb 1825 in Butler Co. (the early marriages CD shows a
marriage date of 1829 which would put her at age 18 instead of age
14).
She says Smith got his first name from
his mother's maiden name, a tradition still carried on today. Smith
worked his father's farm until his marriage to Sarah. Smith died of
a heart attack on 4 Apr 1864 (contradicts the 1860 date given
first). Dean Lunsford shows his name as Smith Randolph Pendley.
Smith and Sarah are supposedly buried
in Sandy Creek but their graves are not marked by a tombstone.
There are several unmarked graves there. Burial: Sandy Creek
Cemetery, Butler Co., KY
Notes for Sarah "Sallie" Whitaker:
Some records show that Sarah was born in Missouri. If her parents
were married in Butler Co., then she was born in KY and not MS.

Notes for James Bartholomew Buck:
There is a marriage record of James H. Buck to Partha Ann Beller;
license date 21 Feb 1863; marriage listed in Book 3, page 227. Was
Amelia Pendley his 2nd wife? There was also a listing of the death
of a son of James and M. J. Buck in 1854 and this James is unknown.
There was more than one James Buck in
the Butler Co. tax records from the mid 1850s through 1868. This
James probably wasn't out on his own until he married in 1866.
The 1870 Fed Census, KY, lists a J. L.
Buck born in TN, age 23, Cumberland Co. Also for 1870 there is a
James B. Buck in McLean Co., KY, age 23, born TN. This could be
where James disappeared to in 1870 since he isn't listed for Butler
Co.

this one is Jackson's son.}

Why James is listed as a widower in

may have died by then and he really was a widower.
