Peter de Brindle
(or de Ashton)
(PET 1)

(Born pos. 1153)

Occasioned c1190i, 1200ii 1202, 1206; dead by June 1212 and held in thegnage the manor of Ashton in Makerfield plus half a ploughland each in Hindley and Alston in Amunderness.

NB. Brindle is sometimes written Brunhull or Brundhill, which are derivatives of Brindle.


[Second Generation]
(PET 1)
Thomas de Brindle (THOM 1)

(Born pos. 1181)

Said to be the son of Peter de Brindle above (queried). Occ June 1212 1221, 1225, 1227 and 1228. Held Ashton in Makerfield, Anderton, Brindle and part of Hindley and Alston.

Thomas had issue:

  2. (THOM 1) William de Anderton (W1) (See pedigree B – Anderton of Anderton)

  3. (THOM 1) Lambert de Anderton (LAM 1)

[Third Generation]
(THOM 1) Sir Peter de Brindle (the Elder) (PET 2)

(Born between say 1210 and 1213)

Son and heir of Thomas de Brindle and elder brother of William de Anderton of Anderton. Sir Peter married one Margery [surname not known] who died before 1276. He stood surety for Sir John de Byron in 1282 and occasioned 1240 to January 1281-2 iii. He was dead by June 1292.>iv

(THOM 1) Lambert de Anderton (or de Burnhull) (LAM 1)

(Born pos. 1216)

Third son of Thomas de Brindle (THOM1) and younger brother of Sir Peter de Brindle the elder. Plaintiff in Jan 1258-9xi against William de Anderton [his elder brother] in an Assize of Novel Disseisen of a tenement in Anderton. Probably the ancestor of the Cunliffes of Ladyhall [Ladyhalgh] in Anderton. Lambert de Anderton married c1246, Avice, dau of Robert de Cunliffe in [of] Billington.

Lambert and Avice had issue:

Thomas de Dutton who occ 1287 and 1292.


(THOM 1) Richard de Brindle (?) (RIC 1)

(Possibly) the youngest son of Thomas de Brindle and youngest brother of Sir Peter de Brindle the elder. Had a freehold in Brindle Oct 1246


[Fourth Generation]
(PET 2) Sir Peter De Brindle (The Younger)v (PET 3)

Son and heir of Sir Peter de Brindle the elder, who also stood surety for Sir John de Byron in 1282. Occasioned as witness to charters and was also dead by 1292. He married (not later than 1273) Alice, dau. and sole heir of Sir Alan Windle of Windle, by his wife Amice, dau. of Simon de Rainhill.vi

Sir Peter de Brindle and Alice had issue:

  2. (PET 3) Joan de Brindle (AL 1)


[Fifth Generation]
(PET 3) Peter De Brindle (PET 4)

Son and heir of Sir Peter de Brindle the younger was in ward to Gilbert de Clifton in June 1292 and died c1295 Sine Prole. He married Margaret [surname not known] his widow in 1298.


(PET 3) Alan de Brindle (or de Windle) (AL 1)

Second son (and eventual heir) of Sir Peter de Brindle the younger, who died between 1318 and 12 Nov 1322. vii

He married Agnes [surname not known], who married secondly Sir Geoffrey de Warburton the elder of Warburton in Cheshire.

Alan de Brindle and Agnes had issue:

  2. (AL 1) Joan de Brindle (JO 1)

  3. (AL 1) Agnes de Brindle (AG 1)


[Sixth Generation]
(AL 1) Sir Peter De Brindle (PET 5)

Died Sine Prole between 23 July 1328 and 12 June 1329viii and married Katherine, dau. of Richard de Houghton of Houghton. Katherine married secondly, Sir Hugh de Venables, Baron of Kinderton in Cheshire (He died 22 Oct 1367) Katherine survived her second husband.


(AL 1) Joan de Brindle (JO 1)

Eldest dau of Alan de Brindle (AL 1) and Agnes. A minor in 1331 and co-heir of her brother, she married in 1335, William Gerrard of Kingsley [son of William Gerrard of Kingsley and Catenhall]ix in Cheshire (He died between 1376 and 1379), a quo the Gerrards of Bryn and Garswood in Ashton in Makerfield.


(AL 1) Agnes de Brindle (AG 1)

Youngest dau of Alan de Brindle (AL 1) and Agnes. A minor in 1331 and co-heir of her brother, married in 1339 David, son of David de Egerton of Egerton in Cheshire, who died Sine Prole between Feb 1369-70 and Aug 1383.x
