Billinge, Lancashire

Billinge

Billinge is a village just to the west of Wigan, bulit on a steep hill. The view from the beacon on the top of the hill is said to look out on "16 counties and the Irish Sea".

Now part of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan.

Birchley Hall

Birchley Hall, Billinge was the home of the Heaton family and came into the possession of the Andertons by dubious means. (See Anderton Legends). This is where Roger Anderton had his illegal printing press. The hall has secret hides for the priests who came to preach here and a hidden escape route to the nearby woods.
