Anderton

There are 31 Andertons living in Melling in 1881. There is a family legend that a James Anderton deserted from Prince Charles Army c. 1745 and came to Melling via Lydiate and worked the quarry at Melling Rocks. There appears to be a repetition of the names James and Daniel in all the Anderton families in Melling in 1881 which may point to the fact that they are all closely related:
