In August 1865 there was an tram derailment accident on Southport Pier involving a Mrs Frances Bateman, (widow), and her brother-in-law, John Anderton, Mrs Bateman unfortunately died in the accident. The Pier Company was sued and her family were awarded �400, while Mr Anderton received �250.
