Standish is a village, now part of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, named after the Standish or de Standyshe family, whose most famous member was Captain Miles Standish.

There is an ancient cross and medieval stocks in the centre of the village and the church is full of memorials to the Standish family, although the monument to Miles is located on Captain's Hill, Duxbury and the famous Standish Family Pew at Chorley Church as by this time the family were living at Duxbury Hall.

Cat i'th' Window

There is a house near Pepper Lane in Standish called the Cat i'th' Window. The story says that it was a place of illegal catholic worship. The sign of the cat in the window meant that the priest was on the premises.
