Origin and Meaning of the name Atherton

ATHERTON is an Old English place name; ton meaning a settlement or village plus the word ather which appears to have three possible origins:
1) Alder tress
2) Elder meaning a chief
3) Adder meaning a small stream or brook.


Introduction

The Atherton, family I am interested in were boatmen on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Lancashire, England. My connection is Ellen Atherton who was my maternal ggg grandmother.


Aims of my Research

We know absolutely nothing about the Athertons, apart from the fact that they were boat people on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. My aim would be to find out as much as possible about them.

Ellen Atherton m. 1858

The Athertons were boatmen on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Ellen Atherton married Edward Stopforth on 19th July 1858 at St. Nicholas Curch, Chapel Street, Liverpool.
