WOOF

Woof

Origin and Meaning of the name Woof

The name WOOF is very probably a corruption of Wolf, the animal, as it tends to sound like Woof when pronounced in Northern Dialect.

Introduction

I first came across the Woof brothers, George & Richard Woof living with my Pearson family, William & Betsy Pearson at Thursgill Farm, Sedbergh in Yorkshire on the 1851 & 1861 censuses. I then came across a marriage between Mary Pearson and William Woof and suspected there must be some family relationship between my Pearsons and the Woof brothers staying with them. Another Woof-Pearson connection I found was: Richard Pearson married an Ellen Woof (Widow of Robert Woof) around 1861.

Aims of my Research

My aim was to find out the link between the Woof borthers and my ggg grandfather William Pearson.
