PROCTOR Family of Maine

Proctor Coat of Arms

These web pages began as a study of George Proctor (1786-1868) of Lisbon ME, Samuel Proctor (1685-1765) of Falmouth ME, and their relationship to one another. This is a work in process and far from finished. At this point, a fair amount of the data is simply compiled from various published sources. I have just scratched the surface in tracking down original documentation and finding new sources. Dispite this, I feel the project has progressed far enough to be of interest to others for the following reasons;
  • this is perhaps the most complete accounting of the descendants of Samuel Proctor to be compiled to date
  • the Salem MA family of John Proctor is well covered
  • two family myths have already been dispelled
  • Myth - According to Stackpole in the History of Durham, George Proctor was "said to have been a brother to Samuel and Thomas"
  • Fact - George is the son of Samuel Proctor and Joanna Berry. This Samuel was killed while working in the woods in Lewiston on 26-Nov-1794
  • Proof - Affidavits found in the pension records of Samuel.
  • Myth - According to most published materials, Samuel Proctor of Falmouth ME was married to Sarah Brackett. The earliest record found of this relationship is Willis' notes in the Rev. Smith Journal publ. in 1846.
  • Fact - Samuel Procotr of Falmouth ME was married to Sarah Larrabee, daughter of Benjamin Larrabee and Deborah Ingersol of Falmouth ME & Lynn MA.
  • Proof - The wording "my beloved son-in-law" in a 1728 North Yarmouth deed from Benj. Larrabee to Samuel Proctor shows that the published at Lynn MA in 1712 for Samuel Proctor and Sarah Larrabee, are for our Samuel of Falmouth, and that the marriage did take place.

My research data is being presented in several formats;

1. The data has been converted to HTML using the GED2HTML program. This results in a surname index, individual index, and family group sheet style pages.
2. The data has also been converted to HTML using Family Origins® software. This version includes all my notes and sources are cited.
3. A GEDCOM file is available to down load (without notes & sources). Please note, I have made extensive use of custom events using Family Origins® and these events may not work properly with other genealogy software.

At the time of creation, this data base had;
220 Individuals in 56 families with 848 events, 53 locations, and 44 sources.
There are other names and places mentioned in various events and notes which are not indexed by the software. In many cases I have carried out the descendant lines for the siblings to my ancestors for 2 to 3 generations - sometimes more.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone that has additional source materials or oral family history on any of the folks in this data base - e-mail me - Nancy (Coffin) Lecompte
