GRO Civil Registration Records
Civil Registration of births, marriages and deaths began 1 July 1837.
Earlier registration as follows:
- 1538 Parish Registers begin.
- 1597 - Parchment books used. Copies of parish registers sent yearly to bishop.
- 1642-1660 - Commonwealth period - records are irregular.
- 1733 - Parish records required to be in English (previously latin).
- 1754 - Lord Hardwick's act - marriages outside the C of E are illegal (except Quakers and Jews)
- 1778 - End of Penal Laws - Many Catholic registers date from this time.
- 1812 - George Rose act - separate standardized registers for baptisms, marriages and deaths.
Birth Records
- Jan 1866 - Only initials for second and subsequent forenames (previously all forenames recorded).
- March 1866 - All records were typeset (previously most were hand written).
- Jan 1867 - First 2 forenames in full, subsequent as initials.
- Jan 1874 - Births reported to registrar (previously information illicited by registrar).
- July 1910 - First forename in full initials for other forenames.
- Sep 1911 - Mother's maiden name recorded.
- Jan 1966 - First 2 forenames in full, subsequent as initials.
Marriage Records
- Jan 1866 - First forename in full initials for other forenames (previously all forenames recorded).
- Jan 1867 - First 2 forenames in full, subsequent as initials.
- Jan 1874 - Deaths reported to registrar (previously information illicited by registrar).
- Jan 1899 - Registrar no longer required to be present at non-conformist weddings.
- July 1910 - First forename in full initials for other forenames.
- March 1912 - Surname of spouse included in index (previously bride and groom recorded in separate indexes.
