Ebsworth, Joseph Woodfall (1824-1908); editor of ballards; younger son of Joseph Ebsworth;
spent his youth in Edinburgh where his father kept a bookshop; studied art;

exhibited four water-colour views of Edinburgh at Scottish Academy, 1849;
wrote verse and prose for Scottish press, 1850-60;

after serving cures, chiefly at Bradford, was vicar of Molash, Kent, 1871-1894;
devoted himself to editing old collections of 'drolleries' and ballards for the Ballard Society;
produced "Bagford Ballards" (from the British Museum), 1876-80, and completed a reprint of "The Roxburgh Ballards (vols, v-ix), 1883-99;
FSA, 1881. He Joseph Woodfall Ebsworth (1824 to 1908) studied under Sir William Allan and David Cott.
He was appointed Artistic Director at the Institute of Lithography in Manchester.
He later became Professor at Glasgow School of Art.
He painted four views from the Scott Monument between 1845 and 1847,
all of which were presented to the City of Edinburgh Council / City Art Centre
by J. Collins Francis in 1910. He Having trained as a painter, Joseph Ebsworth was later ordained, becoming vicar of Molash, near Ashford, where he died and was buried.
The few demands of the small parish allowed him plenty of time for the literary researches which he enjoyed. He made a major contribution to the history of English ballard literature through his transcriptions, annotation and collection of ballards.
He eventually became editor for the Ballard Society.
He composed verses himself, often with a Kentish theme. He was born on 2 September 1824 at London, England. He was christened on 19 September 1824 at St Mary, Lambeth, London, England.
