bullet  General Notes:

John Hutton was living at Millar's Lodgings, Campbells Close, Canongate at the time of his wedding to Margaret Kirkwood in 1837. They were both in their 30s, but Margaret was older and appears to have had a teenage daughter (Elizabeth Weir) from a previous relationship. Throughout the census records John is described as a labourer. The Hutton family appear to have had connections with the McGinty family which may have started when Elizabeth Weir had a relationship with William McGinty (born circa 1826, Ireland) and children including a son William (b. 1848). William junior was brought up in the household of John and Margaret Hutton, was often known as William Hutton and married their grandaughter Margaret Hutton (b. 1858).

Campbells Close, Canongate appears to be a significant address for both the Hutton and McGinty families. John lived there in 1837 and the McGintys were probably there around the same time (they were there in the 1841 census). John's son John is at 4 Cambells Close in 1861, The McGintys are at this same address in 1871 with young John now at 2 Campbells Close. Margaret Clark (the mother of Margaret Hutton who married Willam McGinty/Hutton), widow of young John's brother James was living at 6 Campbells Close in 1871 with her daughter Louise and family (Bryce).

Unfortunately in the 1841 census relationships are not recorded, but it appears that Margaret's sister Anne Kirkwood is with them at Duncan's Close, Canongate. Interestingly there is also a 30 year old Margrate McKinrie (McKinzie) with them. It is probably no coincidence that in the same census with the McGinty's (recorded McKinty) in Campbell's Close, there is a Thomas McKinrie (McKinzie), who married Sarah McGinty and with them is their 6 month old baby.

When John died in 1876 his home was 6 Writers Court, High Street, Edinburgh (his son John's address in the 1881 census). The death record shows the names of John's deceased wife as Margaret Kirkwood and his father as Louis Hutton (nailmaker) .
