Margaret McGINTY

  General Notes:

Margaret died on the 31st August 1868 aged just 7. She died at 1 Browns Close, 79 Canongate, Edinburgh, which is the address of the Hutton family in both the 1861 and 1871 census. The entry in the Statutory Death Register confirms that her parents were William McGinty (Cartwright) and Elizabeth McGinty (formerly Weir). The death was registered by Margaret's brother William who lived at the same address. This therefore indicates that Margaret's mother, Elizabeth Weir, also known as Elizabeth Hutton is the mother of William McGinty (Margaret's brother), born about 1848, even though she is named as Elizabrth Kirkwood on his marriage certificate in 1880. The error is perhaps understandable if Elizabeth, in later years, went by the name Hutton, but John Hutton was her stepfather and her mother was Margaret Kirkwood.
It is interesting that Margaret's father William is noted as deceased in her death record. He is certainly hard to find in the 1861 census and presumed to be serving in the army, so it was perhaps thought he had died in action. However, he reappears in the 1871 census back in Campbells Close, Edinburgh, where he lived as a teenager, and is with his son William and another son John.
